Water Intake

I use to have 4 to 5 gout attacks a year before I started drinking
lots of water. I drink a gallon of water more or less a day and I
haven't had a major gout attack in over a year. I could probably get
by with drinking 3 liters a day of water but since I run and sweat I
drink the extra liter.

Earlier I wrote 2 gallons, I meant quarts. Sorry.
The problem is that when we are not under attack, we forget to drink
    water.
I believe that is a big mistake.
We have to train ourselves to drink at least an extra 2 quarts a day,
maybe up to a gallon, of water a day.

I suspect that you are incorrect. It is the first thing perscribed in
any written description or verbal discussion of how to treat gout.
I'm sure your physician told you to increase your water treatment.
The difficulty is that it is very hard indeed to drink a lot of water
when you are not in pain. If you forget about your gout, which you do
when your toes do not hurt, you also tend to forget about drinking
more water. Also, roughly 1/4 of the prople who have gout, also
suffer from uric acid induced kidney stones. I have had both and
believe me, the only thing in the world I would not trade for a gout
attck is a kidney stone attack.
An observation on my nature, I have been willing to drink more water
each meal for fear of kidney stones while the fear of gout tends to
fall away much more quickly. Neverthelwss I often forget and go for
days and weeks with minimal water, drinking only hen thirsty and even
though I know intellectually that I need to drink more water.

No, I asked both my GP and Rheumatologist about this specifically and
they both told me that fluid and food intake made little difference.

i have seen my attack come to a stop (to my utter
surpise and delight) by drinking 4 liters of water on
a longgggggggg (12 hour) drive home where that was my
    only recourse.
i, too, would swear by the power of drinking water
since i was once a person who rarely ever drank since
i was never thirsty. i wonder if that isnt the reason
behind my getting gout no less!!!
water is always at my side .. like as i write this
    email!
    :-)

    Don
    Great reply.
If I correlate all of Steve's replies and posts, he doesn't have to
worry about eating extra purene loaded food because of allopurinol
and water isn't important. His kidneys are probably indestructable
    too...
    Hey, to each his own.
I gotta go now, I drank too much water a while ago and have to mmm
    well u know...
