Re: wls article in today's miami herald
GRRRRRRRRRR..... LOL
OK, so the MO was preventable so they say.... But so too is lung
cancer from smoking cigarettes, yet it would be unconciousable (sp?)
and illegal for insurance companies to deny treatment for lung
cancer simply because it could have been prevented...
Insurance companies are simply looking for a "way out" of paying for
this much needed surgery that IS known to be the only effective
treatment for MO at this time.
Also, what is this about 'they weren't able to change their eating
habits before so why would they do it after surgery?' Well, duh!
This is why the surgery helps to begin with - because it forces
dietary compliance....

hey caroline, i was pretty annoyed this morning when i read this.
oddly enough, when i unrolled the newspaper, the business section
was the 1st section (usually it's the front page), & i immediately
eyed the article. it was meant for me to see it. i was also
annoyed @ the insinuations. i was used to the insults as an MO, now
they're insulting patients: "only 1/3 attend support groups &
classes". rrrrrr! i go to 2-3 meetings a month.
anyway, i'll let the contributors to that article live with their
misconceptions & frustrations while i enjoy my new life.

PS i received an HMR catalog in the mail, thanx.
Hi Lori :)
I caught that one too.... And honestly, at least for the group I
attend, I would say it is MUCH lower than 1/3 of patients attending
the support group. (there are usually about 50 people at each
meeting (which sounds like alot) but the surgeon's office I went to
does 60+ surgeries per month... Yet, just because someone doesn't
attend a meeting doesn't mean they aren't losing or keeping off
weight, nor does it mean they aren't successful with the surgery...
To add to this, with all the support online (such as with this and
other groups), I am sure many people don't feel the need to attend
the inperson groups....

Wow,
That article pisses me off. My sister has been strugling for a
long time to get this surgery. She has been overweight since she was
a child, and no it wasnt from overeating, although as she has gotten
older, some of it was. I agree with whoever said that about people
who smoke cigarettes, they get cancer because of smoking, so does
that mean that they arent medically covered for cancer? Or how about
someone who drinks too much and gets a liver disease? Or how about a
woman who has stayed up all night taking care of her sick child, and
gets in a car to go somewhere the next day and gets in a car wreck
and needs surgery to save her life? Oh, but it was her fault because
she shouldnt have been driving without having any sleep. Or someone
who is found on the floor of their bathroom after taking too many
pain pills because they forgot they took them the last time? No,
they did that to themselves too, we wont save their life either.
That to me is what these damn insurance companies are telling us.
All I hope right now is that ALL insurance companies will go to
covering this surgery, and not go backwards to not covering it at all.

Just to add that I don't think it's as simple as being preventative.
If it were that easy, we wouldn't all have needed/be needing the
surgery to begin with...
