Gout Bouts
I first joined the group, a few years ago, when I had terrible
swelling in my right big toe. It was itchy and very tender to the
touch. It seemed as though all indicators suggested gout. Bloodwork
came back negative, although it was taken from the arm, not at the
site.
I've done my best to excercise and to drink a lot of water and seem to
have overcome the most of the symptoms (- cross my fingers).
Is this a common thing for symptoms to be there for a few months and
then to subside for long periods of time?
The only thing that i really do differently is not drinking as much
wine.
Comments or ideas?
I really onnly drink wine. I used to have a glass or two with dinner
every night - but now have it only on the weekends - if at all.
I was never a drinking at all, but I would have an occasional drink. There is something in the process of making the alcohol that can cause a gout attack, because dark fruits like grapes actually have a natural anti inflammatory to them.
Dark dry wine is considered least offensive and beer the most. All alcohol causes the dehydration of the blood as the liver tries to rid the blood supply of the alcohol. This causes the concentration levels of the uric acid to increase because there is less fluid for it to be dissolved in, thus increasing the likelihood of crystals forming. Any consumption of alcohol should be followed by a bottle or a large glass of non chlorinated water drank slowly to keep the blood and cells hydrated and lessen the possibility of crystals forming. There are other factors involved but dehydration of the blood is the most offensive to a person who may suffer with gout attacks.
