Husbands WLS complete, me next

2008-08-31 21:52:09

Hi All,
I am Regina and my husband's name is Tee. My husband and I are on
this journey, and he went first because he's awaiting back surgery
for an injury. His surgery was Thursday. It went well. His BMI was 63
and he was able to have his surgery completely laparascopic. Amazing
docs at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles. He had some complications after
surgery with his breathing, which kept him in ICU a day, but he came
home today and is doing well. He's on clear liquids for this week,
plus two protein drinks a day. Any suggestions on good ones would be
appreciated.
I had started the process but got overwhelmed by the requirements of
paperwork and records, so I figured I'd let Tee go first than deal
with me. I'm using a different doc, Dr. Ninh Nguyen in Orange, CA
because he's 2 hours closer and my BMI is lower, so he can do me lap
too. He has a lot of office paperwork requirements, which is
frustrating, but I think I'll go ahead and jump through the hoops.
I'll keep you all posted.
Any suggestions on how to get through that first week post-op would
be appreciated. I'll pass them on to Tee.

Re: Question about the Open RYN and the other? & Good food

2008-08-31 05:24:34

Hi Deborah,
The open and the lap is the same procedure - just a different way of
getting access to your stomach, intestines, etc. While I am glad I
had the lap (less pain and quicker recovery as well as less chance
of hernias following surgery), this is really a decision between you
and your surgeon. I started out at 367 and for people our size,
often the surgeons do open - especially if the person carries a lot
of weight in their abdomen or has had prior abdominal surgery.
As for eating post-op, it is VITAL that all foods be chewed until
pureed in the mouth, so this is something you should definately be
speaking to your surgeon (and dentist) about. Of course, you could
puree everything in a blender and have it this way :)
Hope this helps :)

Question about the Open RYN and the other? & Good food

2008-08-30 22:22:58

I'm having the Open RYN not lap RYN which is best?My doctor told me
he like to do open better then lap. Also he says he does open so if
the any ruptures or hernias he can repair them then plus takes the
gallblatter out then to.If anyone lives in Western Iowa or South
Dakota or Nebraska I would say go to him.I went to a group meeting
to learn what it's about some and what to expected on the
surgery. Then he makes you set up a appointment with a Gastric Bypass
Nutrition Edcation Class that help me some but also confused me some
too. Then made another appointment to just see him then he sent it in
and a month later they called and gave me a date.I was so happy
about that but now I just wondering if Lap or opens better.I guess
as time gets closer I'm getting worried some of after the surgery.I
also have No teeth so I have to really watch what I eat.Can anyone
give me help now what the best food that will keep me health and be
able to chew easier?I on this is a stupid question but with NO TEETH
I guess it's a good question.Thanks for help My Dr.Fredrick Harris

Offically, I have lost 70 pounds (Although the doctors digital scale seems

That kind of surprised me, but I guess you have to start tapering off the

Hi Tracy,
If you go to www.coastalobesity.com, you will find a form there that
is EXTREMELY comprehensive. You might want to try printing that out
and using it as a basis for the info to submit to the insurance
company. But with Medicaid or Medicare, I don't believe they even
give preapproval - you just find a surgeon/hospital who accepts it
and then they will bill Medicaid/Medicare directly. I'd check with
your surgeon's office to be sure.
Hope this helps :)

hypovitaminosis

2008-08-26 18:08:19

Dear Lori H.,
Here's the explanation of hypovitaminosis:
Hypovitaminosis is a condition of vitamin deficiency in the body. This means
that the vitamin levels are sufficiently high to prevent severe diseases,
but they are insufficient for the maintenance of health. The reasons for
vitamin deficiency may be of primary nature, such as poor and unpredictable
dietary intake and incomplete utilization of vitamins. Other causes of
vitamin deficiency are increased needs for vitamins in physical exertion,
during pregnancy and lactation, in the period of growth, in infectious
diseases, and in increased needs for vitamins during lactation, in profuse
sweating and diarrhea.

GRRRRRRRRRR..... LOL
OK, so the MO was preventable so they say.... But so too is lung
cancer from smoking cigarettes, yet it would be unconciousable (sp?)
and illegal for insurance companies to deny treatment for lung
cancer simply because it could have been prevented...
Insurance companies are simply looking for a "way out" of paying for
this much needed surgery that IS known to be the only effective
treatment for MO at this time.
Also, what is this about 'they weren't able to change their eating
habits before so why would they do it after surgery?' Well, duh!
This is why the surgery helps to begin with - because it forces
dietary compliance....

My motivation was definitely my family. I wanted to live a healthier
and happier life with them instead of watching from the sidelines.
The decision to have surgery resulted from one of a million web
searches looking for another miracle way (drug/drink/bar) to lose
weight. I had never known anyone who had gotten the surgery nor had
I ever really heard much about it. I'm glad I was taking another
tearful stab at finding a successful way to lose weight or I never

Re: response from wls lori

2008-08-22 21:15:28

hi lori,
I've been researching this for quite some time. I am also glad to have
found this group that is rich with REAL people who have gone through
all the pre-op mess and made it to surgery. I wish I was among them now.
I was just looking for more information about people who are decades
past surgery, and to inquire about their quality of life as it is Now.
I've read a lot of positives, surely at the beginning there can be
nothing but optimism, but lately I've been uncovering some sad tales
too, which causes hesitation.
Regardless, I don't like the quality of life I have now and do not
intend to spend another penny on a failed "diet." I'm at the "end of
my rope" stage.
I've gone "the extra mile" and then some. Information only makes us
the wiser. For something as serious as WLS, we'd be unwise if we
didn't do our research.
Thanks for your reply.

Hi Angela and Lori H
My answer to the question of who motivated me towards wls is myself. I had
looked into it about 3 years ago and made the unfortunate mistake of mentioning
it to my mom who said it was a crazy idea and to just eat less (my mom
suffered with weight problems due to diabetes for the greater part of her life).
I
did not listen to her and now 3 years later (my mom passed away last year from
diabetes complications) I have my surgery date set for 8/25/03 for lap rny
and I am for one glad I made the decision to do it. People will always give
their opinions on how you are to live your life but the ultimate decisions rest
on ourselves and what we want out of this shot at life. Good Luck Everyone!!

I had some horrific dreams last night, but thereafter slept oh so
well in my own bed, absent IVs, beeps, cords, booties and incessant
hospital intrusions.
Andrea visited me before the FMC meet, just after surgery (or was
that her spirit?), which was great, and appreciated. Its good to be

goes.

Natasha - Blood tests

2008-08-17 03:05:38

Dear Natasha,
This is my surgeon's protocol. I think (in my not so humble opinion) that
your surgeon is definitely WRONG in waiting a year to run bloods. By the
time a year is up you could be deficient in many many areas. Too scary for
me. Here's what my surgeon recommends:
It is recommended that for the first year post-op that you have your blood
tested every three (3) months. After the first year then it is every six (6)
months. Just to let you that this testing requires about 6 or 7 tubes of
blood so don't freak out when they line them all up !!!
Also make sure the lab knows the proper handling of the specimens, one test
requires that the blood be kept from light and several require special
tubes....just politely ask the lab to look up all the requirements for each
test.
You should always get a copy of your blood tests and compare the results for
trends. For instance if your lab values are in the "normal" range but they
are consistantly getting lower each time you get them done, you want to do
something about it before they fall into the "abnormal" range.
Here is the list: Comprehensive Metabolic Profile Lipid Profile ALT
(SPGT)GGTLDH Phosphorous - inorganic Uric acid Hemogram with platlets B-12 &
Folate Iron, TIBC, % Sat Vitamin A & D (25-hydroxy) Thyroid panel (T3U, T4,
FTI, TSH)Zinc Magnesium Ferritin
These are the ICD-9 Diagnosis Codes needed for insurance reimbursement
579.3 - post-surgical malabsorbption; 269.2 - hypovitaminosis; 244.9
hypothryoidism.

another sleep study question

2008-08-16 16:43:25

Dear Artist,
Being diagnosed with sleep apnea will not interefere with your having
surgery. It just makes them aware that you have to be observed by a
pulmonologist post-surgery and you may (or may not) have to stay on a vent
following surgery for a little bit. They just watch you a little more
closely. The good news is that of all the people I know that had sleep
apnea (and there are many, many of them) only two remain with sleep apnea
post-surgery but their sleep apnea was very, very severe and obstructive.
Don't sweat the sleep test. It just is for knowledge of how to handle your
case in the operating room and immediately post-op.

Dumping?(FROM CHRISTOPHER)

2008-08-15 13:27:44

Hello all,
well ill start by just telling a little of my story then get into
dumping, well most of you know I had my surgery may 9th 2000, I was over 780 lb.
IM now down to under 300 and thanking God for this surgery, i had several
medical problems before hand, on several pills a day, and much much more.
for dumping it will happen to all of us, its from eating to fast and
eating to much, what we all need to learn is how to chew our food down to like
water before we swallow it, my biggest advice to all is to go out and buy a
baby plate and spoon, fork and sipper cup and eat with those before and after
the
surgery till you learn because you have to understand what ever you can fit
into your thumb is all you can eat, and that's not a lot so if you learn how to
chew chew chew chew chew your food very well, and it will go down easy, and
dumping will not happen.
also for going out for dinner you have to see what agrees with you and what
doesn't agree with you after this surgery, because different foods you use to
like you might not like it afterwards, its trial and error, its like going
back to school and having to learn all over again, its hard to do. plus chewing
will be hard because were used to just taking a bite and swallowing our food,
but now we cant because if you don't it will get stuck and get that dumping
feeling or get sick to your stomach and throw it up, so just take it one day at
a time and one bite at a time and things will get better.
so you can go out to eat just try everything, i can go to a buffet still
but not eat what i used to eat but i do try everything, it just takes me much
much more time to eat my breakfest, lunch, dinner where it took us maybe 20
minutes to eat each meal now takes me an hour or more so now i enjoy my food and
taste it, so please take your time all and enjoy.
if you like you all can contact me by email or by phone it will be at the
bottom, take care and i congratulate all of you that have had this and welcome
you to the losing side of life and for you thinking of this, just do it!! and
life will be wonderful.

Re: I don't understand how these threads work

2008-08-13 04:01:14

Sometimes the responses to a post can be a LONG time after the
original post. It depends on when the respondent read it. Some
people read the posts here on the site, others get them "packaged" in
an e-mail, while still others get them as individual e-mails (those
people go insane!!....lol)
The easiest way to get back to the original post is to look at the
top of the message window just above the column headers. On the far
right is an option to view by Date or by Thread. If you select
Thread, it will list the original post and all responses.
Hope this helps.

Re: Another SLEEP study question from artist

2008-08-12 20:21:14

Artist...No, it's the other way around. Obesity can cause sleep
apnea because the loose skin in the throat blocks the airways. And,
where did you ever get the idea that WLS is tied to a certain life
expectancy? Clearly, your lifespan may be shorter if you don't have
it but this isn't like an organ transplant. There are no limited
years tied to the surgery. I think what you may be referring to is
that the weight loss associated with WLS may be time limited but, by
then, you should have been well along with chaging your eating habits
so that you won't regain the weight you lost.

Another SLEEP study question from artist

2008-08-10 13:36:17

Do they try to blame sleep apnea for weight issues? Do I understand that we do
NOT want to be diagnosed with sleep apnea to be approved?
My Dr. said I have sleep apnea, and I believe I do (I'm told I snore like a
trucker).
I have degenerative disk disease. I am currently nursing myself through a week
long muscle spasm. It's hell to be like this. I can't bend down to pick up
anything.
My disk problems are compiled by the excess weight. So this is my main reason
for the WLS. My back never bothered me when I weighed less (years ago).
What is the life expectency post op? I've heard of some who have made it 20
years. Any others?
Just wondered.

Hi Tanya,
Yes, I've had this happen with the smell as well... Hmmmm.... Unless
those soups are filled with fat and sugars, you should be able to
get them down ok. Have you spoken with your doctor to rule out a
stricture? Also, it is really important to get in more calories per
day because otherwise, most of the weight you will lose is coming
from your muscles and not fat. And your heart is a muscle so you
could end up with a heart problem. Please please PLEASE check with
your surgeon to rule out a stricture and figure out what you can get
down that will up your calories.

HELP!

2008-08-09 12:42:18

I am so mad right now & so confused... depressed, you name it! I
have been approved by doctor for this surgery, have seen a surgeon
and gotten all my stuff together for insurance. Although, for my
insurance BCBS they wanted me to to see a shrink, that's fine - I
understand why they would want that. WHAT I DID NOT EXPECT was for
the insurance to place my surgery (was set for July 31st) on hold
while they get "additonal info" from the shrink. According to BCBS I
have to go back to him (have an appt this monday at 8am) and express
to him I am 100% for this surgery with NO reservations, and he in
return has to say he is 100% for this surgery with NO reservations,
problem is, he is saying he does not do that - he just evaluates
people and determining if someone needs it is not his job - though I
think what they want is just to know that mentally im ok. I am a
wreck. I feel like this is just never going to happen now and I dont
who im more mad at the - the shrink for not doing it right the first
time, or the insurance company for being slow and demanding on this.
I mean how much more clairification do you need that im 100% for this
surgery? -anyone else ever have this? Please, any advise would be
helpful im at SUCH A LOSS and have been crying for a week now :(

Demons? X-Post

2008-08-08 17:00:10

Hi everyone,
I belong to several groups and am cross posting this. I know that is looked
upon as a no-no, but please bear with me this time. I had open VBG/RNY (my Dr.
does a combo of the two) on 6/11. to date I have lost about 55 lbs. I seem to
have very little complications. The main complication is I eat too fast and
therefore eat too much. Heck, for all I know, I may have stretched my little
pouch already.
My main problem is 'demons'.....food demons. I cannot stop thinking of food.
I am obsessed with it, more so than before the surgery. I sat here the other
night and cried to my dear hubby because I wanted a Big Mac and fries! I feel
as if I am having a nervous breakdown. Food, food, food....I want food and lots
of it. I feel as if I'm possessed. I am not exaggerating in any way. Am the
only one that feels this way or has ever felt this way?
I welcome any and all suggestions. Please direct me in the right direction. I
can't go on like this. Thanks in advance.
Have a Blessed One,

2008-08-07 23:17:16

Hello Everybody
I just feel so good I had to share :o) I just stepped on the scale this
morning and I am at 275 lbs !!! You say yeah great so what and I say oh yeah!!!
giving myself a flying high five!! I have not even had my surgery yet that is
on August 25, 2003 and I have more than met my surgeon's requirement to lose 10
pounds by my surgery date. I started off this journey weighing in at 293 lbs
on 04/30/03 at my first consultation with the surgeon. Last month when I was
called in after completing all my pre-op test I was weighed and I weighed 280
lbs and I felt great and now following the eating lifestyle of a post-op by
eating protein first and plenty of water and no sugar I am down to 275 today.
I am hoping that by 8/25 that I will be between 260 and 270 lbs and that will
help kick start my weight loss after surgery because it my loss goes according
to my plan by November I should be between 210-220 lbs and more to normal
since I have been in 14 years since I had my daughter. By August of next year I
should be where I am supposed to be 130-150 lbs and I will never ever miss
being fat again.
I fully intend to start doing the exercise system called the firm after
surgery when my doctor gives me the go ahead. This system boasts that it can
tone,
firm and assist in burning off body fat with cardio and weight lifting
techniques. I also plan on buying a bike to ride outside and one for my
daughter.
I feel so good and I know that the choice for surgery is the best decision I
ever made.
This is the most weight I have ever lost on my own, but I am under no
delusion that I can take it all off myself and keep it off WITHOUT SURGERY.
Good Luck and Best Wishes to everyone on every step of this journey

Funny question --Don't think I'm weird but...

2008-08-07 22:20:27

At 4 weeks post op, I am still on a liquid diet with allowance for
malt o meal and cream of wheat. I have to be on this for another
week and a half to two weeks. I'm doing great but everything is
making me sick except for the cereals and that's a lot of carbs even
though I'm only eating about 200 cals per day. Here's the funny
part....when my hubby and kids eat something, say for instance last
night they had chinese food, smelling it makes me satied. Does that
make any sense? Just the smell of some food is enough for me without
eating anything. Am I just weird or what? I have tried to eat what
I'm supposed to like my cream of chicken, tomato or whatever soup
but they make me nauseaous and the only thing that stays down is the
hot cereal. So..how strange am I that just smelling normal food (and
I PROMISE I'm not eating any of it. It's not even tempting to eat!
Just love the smell) is enough to make me satisfied?
Another question, I've asked this before but did anyone stop snoring
IMMEDIATELY after surgery?

I sure love to find out all the great info before I go in I want to
say this was the besst site I have found that tells you the truth
about it all.I've been so worried and upset set about what I was
doing. But now with being able to talk and ask so many questions and
have friend I mean True friends like me to talk to and help me if I
have so many crazy questions that I need help with.I would have
already had my surgery but the doctors office were slow getting all
the info my insurance company need to approved me.As soon as they
got it I was aproved. Then after waiting to be aproved then find out
I'm on a waiting list for the Ry open surgery. But Thank God for
angels I only had to wait few days on the list. But then they said
that I couldn't get it until August 18, becuz Doctor was going on
vacation and also move into a bigger office was why not till that
date I was a little upset But I though at least I have a date and so
Far it's going a little fast Thank God But I'll have to go about 60
miles from home to Sioux Falls South Dakota for surgery so my
children well not be able to come visit me.But I'm hopeing to be out
in three days after surgery and be home again. The waiting is whats
killing me.I want to get it over and start the new life.I read some
people saying that they had so much trouble losing Wt # after is it
true ? are they doing something wrong are was it becuz they were to
heavy and it take time?I'm about 365 from the last time I was Wt#
will that make it harder to lose?

Re: On Vitamin B-12 Liquid ?

Early on you just keep trying to slowly increase your water quantity
as you do need to sip slowly etc. I found during week 2 that I went
to a glass and I was able to progress my water intake quite a bit
rather than drink out of a bottle. Even though I tried hard not to
take in air I must have been because I was belching awful and feeling
yucky. The glass got rid of all of this. I have been able to drink
out of a bottle just fine for about 2-1/2 months. I found by about 4-
6 weeks I was able to drink large quantities at once without
problems. The only issue I had was if I had not had a drink for a
long time, like overnight, I had to take a few small swallows first
and then I could gukp down whatever I wanted. If I didn't do the
small sips the pouch would revolt and I would feel like I was having
a heart attack for a few minutes till it started to work it's way
through the pouch. I don't know if I had to wake my pouch up or
what, but as long as I follow this protocol I had no problem.
You don't want to drink 30 minutes before or at least 30 minutes
after you eat. The rest of the time go for it. I am still not
consistent in my water intake but do find if I keep ice water handy I
do drink it a ton more. But I like it ice cold. I got a water
bottle that has a wide cap on it so I can put ice in. I still have
work at making sure I typically get the 64 oz.
Only 2 or 3 times have I accidently drank water while eating and your
pouch will let you know you screwed up. The best thing is not to
even put it on the table or near you when you are eating. It's to
easy to grab out of habit. Since most people are used to using water
to wash things down instead of chewing properly I found that early on
I used fat free gravy on lots of things to provide a little moisture,
especially when trying something new. I still need mushrooms and
onions and BBQ sauce on a cheeseburger to get it down. Otherwise
it's just too dry and I get sick.
Post-op eating is a learning curve. You will try some things and the
pouch will say NO!!! But try tiny bites, chew and then wait to see
how it sits before taking another bite. You eventually get to a
point where you know by the 1st or 2nd bite whether it is going to be
a problem or not.
You will do fine. Just take it easy and listen to your body. It's
the feedback you can get.

I assume if you are anemic that they have added iron supplements to
your regimine. If not, question them why. Being anemic will make
you real run down etc.
Congrats on the 70 lbs! Where in WI are you and who did your
surgery? You are right though, it was a beautiful day here today.
Hope it stays through the weekend.
I see my surgeon in about 3-1/2 weeks for my 6 months check up which
will really be closer to 6-1/2 months. Because I saw him so much the
first 3-1/2 months, due to my incision problems, I got goofed up on
the normal schedule.

Hi there. Good luck on getting the surgery :) I will answer your questions.
No I don't regret for one MILLI-second getting this surgery. It was kind of
rough in the beginning but I'd do it again in a heart beat.
The worst complication I've heard about is blood clots.
Can't answer your last one since I don't have any children.
Hope this helps some.
