Good morning,
Getting disablilty is tough, but not impossible. Part of the trick
to getting approved is knowing how to arrange and submit the
documentation. I'm not talking about your paperwork alone, but
about your doctor's reports as well. The women that handles all the
paperwork with my PCP has been complimented by the regional SS
office on how clear, concise, and direct her submissions are. She
consequently has a pretty good track record in helping her clinic's
patients get approved. That doesn't mean everyone gets approved, of
course. There still must be overriding medical/mental concerns. It
just helps to have somebody who understands the bureacray and what
information to provide and in what format. Unfortunately, you have
no control over how your doctor's office may submit the paperwork
short of changing doctors.
For that reason, you might consider hiring a lawyer to appeal any
denials, one that specializes in SS issues. Many will not charge
for an initial consultation, and they could tell you if you have a
legitimate case. Many will also take payment from any settlement
you eventually get from your claim. Like I said, you may benefit
from utilizing someone who really knows the system well.
Concerning your WLS itself...I don't know what state you live in,
but many states offer a program offering to pay for the surgery with
the intention of returning you to the workforce. They see it as an
investment in you...after all, if you're not working, how can you be
paying them taxes, right? :-) I had my surgery through Arkansas
Rehabilitation Services, which is the program I described here.
Since my weight had led me to other health issues and disabilities
preventing work, my surgery, initial hospital stay, and all other
fees were paid. It can be a long, arduous process getting approved
(paperwork, interviews, more paperwork, medical and psych
evaluations with the state's doctors, MORE paperwork, etc.), but it
might work for you. If you are not sure about the existence of such
a program in your state, your doctor's office can tell you about
it. (It was my surgeon's office that recommended the program to me
after my insurance repeatedly denied me.)
Whatever happens, don't get discouraged, and keep trying to find
that "miracle".
