Old-timers?

I had my surgery 3.5 years ago. Best decision of my life
Lost 100lbs but leveled off with 20 to go. I have kept it off easily
with proper diet & exercise. I'm healthier than I've ever been in my
life. Doctor is adjusting my thyroid medication. I hope I'll start
to lose more.
Anyone else in this postion?

Hey, I really like that idea. I'm not too crazy about announcing to the
world I had WLS, but I think that is playful enough and could wear that even
after
the trip. I vote for that one!!!

I have noticed some people use the Whey protien vs the other protiens, questions
for the group:
1) which type of protien do you like the best?
2) which type of protien bar do you eat?
3) anybody got anymore yummie recipes?

Hi everyone ,It's been a while since I posted!

2008-05-30 21:43:24

For those of you don't know me or maybe don't remember my posting
about 5 or 6 mo ago . My name is Tammy Jo and am from Elizabeth City
NC!
I just wanted to give everyone an updateon how I have been doing!
I think the last time I posted I hit the weighing under 200 mark!
I'm sorry for taking so long to post but have been keeping up with
all of you and your posts.
I had my surgery -open RNY Aug 28th 2002 at the weight of 258lbs!
I am 5 ft tall and my husband and I have 5 children 15yrs to 3 yrs.
In april I had two surgeries (Non WLS related) and had a hard
recovery from them.
Before these two surgeries I had reached 140lbs and through all of
my searching for a good plastic surgeon I found Dr. Craig Merril in
Suffolk , Va .He filed all the paper work to the insurance Co and 2
weeks later go my insurance approval for abdomanolplasty!
I have had alot of trouble since the gastric bypass keeping my blood
count up and have had real hard cycles that did,t help. My obgyn
said I had adnomyosis as well as endometriosos and so he wanted to
do a hysterectomy so the two Dr's got together and found me a Dr in
Suffolk that could take my uterus the same time as the tummy tuck.
They were successful and I had the surgery July 11th the also fixed
an abdominal heria and and my belly button was also herniated (whicj
I no longer have).
Whew! I am recovering fine and feel great! I look down and don't
know whose stomach that is but it looks wonderful!
Before WLS I was in a 24 and before my Tummy tuck I was in a 10 and
weighed 140lbs!
Today I am in a easy 6/7 and weight126lbs.
This surgery and my hard work changing my lifestyle has finally paid
off!
I can't tell you how good it feels to know it's over!the bondage I
was in to food is over! I have a new out look on evvery part of my
life! My relationship with food is so different and thanks to the
tool of this surgery, It has taken me out of that awful bondage I
was in!
Would I do it all over again!
You betcha! In a NY minute I would!
This is a great group and love you all so much !
I promise not to take so long to post again!

Tomorrow is my BIG DAY!!

2008-05-30 19:53:20

Hi Everyone,
I can't believe tomorrow is the BIG day. The day that all of us
anxiously await. I have to be at the hospital at 5:15am to have
surgery at 7am. Dr. Klem will be doing my surgery at Central DuPage
Hospital in Winfield, IL (a western suburb of Chicago). I told my
girls (ages 11 & 14) that it was their choice what my "last meal" was
going to be and they chose Subway so we had Subway for lunch. I had
a 6 inch subway melt with lots of veggies on it. We are supposed to
have a light dinner (no bowel prep) so I will just have a protein
shake. I can't believe when I stepped on the scale this morning that
I have lost another 5 lbs. I'm curious to see what I weigh before I
go into surgery tomorrow. I have lost over 15 lbs since my initial
consultation with Dr. Klem in March. Most of the weight has come off
in the past month or so. I have just gotten into a post surgery mind
set. I stopped eating most foods that I would not be able to eat
post of and started cutting back on portions. I can't wait to see the
pounds come off after the surgery.
Please everyone keep me in your prayer and thoughts tomorrow as I
start my journey to "the other side" of weight loss surgery. My
husband still does not want me to have the surgery. In fact, this
morning he told me to pick out the clothes and anything else I wanted
to have buried with me. I think at this point that I have just left
it in God's hands. Please send me well wishes, I can use all the
support I can get.

Journal entry rg swimming and flashbacks

2008-05-30 08:47:53

Hi everyone :)
Thought I might share this. It is something that I wrote in my
journal and then posted to my weight loss surgery profile on
obesityhelp.com. I've been finding that I've been doing a lot of
writing there and this is helping me to sort through a lot of what I
have been processing since the surgery. For awhile, I was concerned
about writing about the abuse issues, but it definately is
connected to my dealing with a weight problem to begin with along
with my coping without food now, so I am beginning to open up a
little there. Anyway, here is what I wrote today and also, for all
of my writing on the subject and of my progress, it can be found at
www.tinyurl.com/bkld .
I so hope this finds everyone well :)
Caroline
7/13/03 Sunday, 12:00 pm - Weight 312 lbs
Well, "that time of the month" came Friday and all I can say is I am
hurting SOOOOO bad! It seems like my periods are reverting back to
how bad they were when I was a teenager. Ow! And there is definately
something to my weight loss coming to a halt every time I start my
period. This is the third month that this is happening. Infact, I
even GAINED 2 lbs since Friday (although I suspect it has more to do
with water retention than fat/muscle changes). Wishing there was a
way around this!
I am proud of myself, though... Even with all the cramps and also
having severe constipation (which I am beginning to think is a
normal part of the process for post-ops), I went swimming
yesterday :) It feels so good to be in the water - as though I
am "free", and it allows me a temporary escape from everyday life. I
haven't been swimming in our condo's pool (which is nice because it
is outside), but rather the pool at LA Fitness which is only 1/4 of
a mile from where my hubby and I live. The pool is a 25 yard pool
with 3 lap lanes which allows me to get in some serious laps. I even
picked up the book "Total Immersion" by Terry Laughlin to remind
myself of stroke technique. My upper body is fine when it comes to
my stroke, but my lower body is a different story. My hip roll is
good, but I feel stuck doing a typical flutter kick which is
draining me of energy and the ability to benefit fully fitness
swimming.
But I am proud of myself... Getting past feeling so self concious
has been hard to say the least. I find myself trying to go during
off hours and even then, when people are in the pool (especially
men), I find myself waiting until they are swimming the direction
away from where I put my towel and get into the pool for fear that
they will see me and all of my fat. But who am I kidding? Most
people where swim goggles and I am sure can see me no problem under
water - jiggling and all... Gosh, I can't wait till I lose this
weight and don't have to feel like the whole world is looking at
me...
One challenge that I didn't expect is dealing with flashbacks while
at the pool. Being that it was my grandfather who taught me all I
know about swimming (he was a Masters swimmer who competed most of
his life), I find myself wishing he was with me, holding one hand on
my back and one hand on my belly, stabilizing me while teaching me
proper stroke and leg kick technique. Yet, at the same time, there
is some part of me that feels scared and paralyzed inside,
especially when it comes time to get out of the pool and go into the
showers. So many memories that come up, and it has been a struggle
grounding myself.
But I am proud of myself... I've found some ways to console these
scared parts of myself and have been able to "push" myself to go
swimming despite the flashbacks - namely a lot of "self talk" but
also use of strong smelling shampoos and body washes that help keep
me grounded. I've discovered what I call the Loreal "Fish" line of
products which is a whole line of shower products for kids. The
shampoos, conditioners and body washes come in all different
powerful fruity scents and best of all, they come in bottles that
are in the shape of fish :) This really helps to console the younger
parts of myself while allowing them to focus on the fun fish
bottles/fruity smells as opposed to painful childhood memories.
So... Yes... I am proud of myself...

Decided to step on a scale...

2008-05-29 22:08:17

Went to the mall today to so some window shopping and so that hubby
and son could have lunch and decided to step on the scale at GNC. My
surgery was 6/20/03 (three weeks and two days ago) and I have lost
33 lbs!! I'M SO EXCITED! I know it's not a lot but there is no way
in he double hockey sticks I could have ever lost that much in 3
weeks before! I'm just thrilled! I can't wait until my 6 week post
op appointment to see if I can reach the 50lbs gone mark.
Sorry ..I just had to share this will you all. Hope you don't mind.

Catheter?

2008-05-29 21:49:55

This is kind of an embarrasing question, and I hope I don't offend
anyone. However, I understand that I am to have a catheter for the
surgery. Does this go where I think it goes? (i.e., does it go in
the place where nature normally gets rid of liquids from the body?)
Does everyone have this when they have the surgery?

I'm approved!!!!

2008-05-29 10:07:17

Hi everyone.................I know y'all probably don't remember me, and
that's okay. I had gone to receiving "no mail" because I just couldn't
take the subject of gastric bypass everyday when I thought that I would
never get to have it myself.
Just when I was starting to jump through Aetna's hoops to get approved,
my husband's company, Boeing Defense and Space sold the plant that he
works at to a French company called Labinal. So, with the change of a
new employer meant a change of insurance carriers and we were assigned
Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Alabama (we live in north Texas). This
insurance kicked in on July 1st. On July 2nd my DR faxed in about 65
pages worth of medical histories, etc to BC/BS attempting to get an
approval for the open RNY. On Thursday the 10th, I called to check the
status, and this nice lady on the other end of the line told me,"Yes
ma'am, you have been approved for gastric bypass surgery. We will be
faxing a letter to your DR today instructing him of your approval so
that he can set up the surgery for you"
I literally started to bawl, right there at work, in front of all of my
co-workers. Those were such sweet words to hear. I never thought I'd
hear them.
So.............officially, my surgery is scheduled for Monday, September
the 8th. I'm so excited, and nervous. Only 8 short weeks away.
Tell me what all of y'all did during your "waiting" period? Did you
attempt to lose weight, or did you pig out the entire time? Will my DR
require me to fast before the diet? I won't go in for my major
consultation/pre-op stuff with him until the middle of August, when of
course I'll barage him with questions.
Can't wait to finally start my new life. Just a little info on me. I'm
32 years old, married to Glenn for 11 years, we have an 8 year old
daughter, Katelyn. and we live in NorthTexas (Denton). I am 5 7' ,
weigh about 402 lbs, BMI of 63 and no real co-morbidities. I went to
the OB/GYN on Wednesday and my blood pressure was 140/80. Which isn't
horribly bad, but it could be better. I'm hoping that the swelling in
my lower legs and ankles goes away after I start to lose weight. I hate
having feet like Barney Rubble.
Can't wait to learn a ton from y'all (no pun intended) Ü

14 grateful months out

4 days to go and nervous

2008-05-28 16:06:46

Hi All,
Well, I finally heard that I was approved 100%...yippee from my
insurance company. It just took what seems like forever, but
apparently it was only sent in recently. Geesh, made me nervous.
Now there is nothing standing in my way and when I heard I was
approved I felt numb, like there's no other herdals to jump. So I'm
having surgery this Friday! I can't believe it's here. It just
flew by. I got my surgery date in April and I am shocked it's
really here.
So here are a few questions and please excuse my ignorance.
1. Can I or can I not wear a bra home from the hospital if I have a
drain in (drain won't come out until following Thursday)? Not sure
why this is bothering me, but I guess being my size I've never gone
without a bra, so I will need to choose an appropriate dark shirt to
leave the hospital in.
2. Hospital: I've read the lists of things to bring, but if you
could remember, what were you're top 5 things you truly
needed/used? I feel like I'm bringing too much and don't want to.
I already have to pack for 2 weeks of staying at my parents house
afterwards and I feel like I'm bringing my house with me. (DVD's,
books, magazines, writing materials, stuff so I don't get bored, but
it's not like camp, I'll be recuperating and probably won't need any
of this). Please help me. I'm a planner and sometimes being one is
a negative.
I think that's it for now. I realize a lot of pre-ops ask the same
questions and please just bare with me. I'm a little stressed. I
have to work until Wednesday and I'm booked each night with
something as well. Thursday is my only day to do last minute things
and I just want to be sure I have everything I need where I need it.
Can we say NEUROTIC?
Thank you all for reading/listening to me. I can't express how much
I've learned and enjoyed reading everyones post for months and
months. I honestly don't think I could have decided to have this
surgery without having this group and without the Internet.
Goodness, the internet is the BEST thing that was invented.
Ok, enough. Please any suggestions to my 2 questions would be
greatly appreciated.
Love to all,
Beth K.

A lurker, coming out to say HI! :)

2008-05-28 03:00:17

Hi everyone! My name is Vickie...I am having lap RNY on AUGUST
4th...very soon! :)
My dr. told me he wanted me to lose 10lbs. before surgery and
that isn't happening. Last time I saw him I asked him about
this and his response was "well, the day of surgery when I see
you again, I won't say this woman hasn't lost her 10 lbs so I
won't do her surgery." Since he told me that, I've been on a
eating binge almost everyday. BAD, BAD, BAD I know.
Anyone else do this or doing it now? I have been taking my
vitamins and tums most days and trying to drink a protein shake
a day too...but portion sizes are not at all smaller. I guess
in my mind it will have to change after surgery so why bother
until then. I don't think this is a good way to see it though.
I wonder if anyone would like to advise me on how to change my
focus...I am just so nervous...that the food is what makes me
temporarily feel better. Crazy or what???
Blessings to each of you,
Vickie

What to eat

2008-05-28 02:15:26

Hello!
I've still been having problems with the entire eating side of this equation.
I will be nine weeks post op on Tuesday. Things really are getting much
easier, but meat still isnt my friend and its making getting my protein in very
unpleasant and somewhat difficult. I am sick to death of protein shakes! Plus
I have been in plateau hell for 2 weeks now and I know its because I am not
eating enough. Over the past couple of days I have been on a mission to find
things that I can eat, that I actually WANT to eat, and wanted to share what I
have discovered so far.
I wrote yesterday about Braum's milk and how it has 50% more protein than
other brands. I've also bought some Carnation Instant breakfast (CIB). Where I
live, they only make the sugar free in chocolate flavor and I was really
wanting some variety. I have been lucky so far and havent experienced any
trouble
with dumping, so I said to heck with worrying about the 20 grams of sugar in
the CIB and bought myself a variety pack - I decided it was more important to
get my protein in than it was to worry about the amount of sugar I am eating
and comparitively, 20 grams isnt that much. Even diluted fruit juice (which I
could have from day one) has as much sugar in it. So I take one packet of CIB
(5 grams of protein), 1 cup of Braums FF Milk (12 grams of protein) and 1/3
cup of dry, instant milk (8 grams of protein) shake it all up and it makes a
delicious shake that doesnt taste near as horrid as "protein shakes" and it has
a
total of 25 grams of protein. If you have trouble with sugar, or just dont
want to risk it, you can do the same thing with the sugar free CIB.
Another thing I have found that I really like and that my pouch really likes
is Campbell's Select Italian Style Wedding Soup. It comes in a ready to eat
can with 2 servings of 1 cup each. Even though I cannot eat much solid food at
once (maximum 1/2 cup before my pouch starts hurting) I can slowly eat the
entire can of this soup over about an hour. It has tiny meatballs, spinach and
some kind of little tiny firm pasta in chicken broth. The whole can has 16
grams of protein, 6 grams of sugar, 5 grams of fat, plus a good amount of
vitamin A and a smidge of calcium and iron. I really love the way it tastes and
it
is very smooth and easy on my pouch.
Hope some of my finds can help you out too!

Tampons or whatever you like even if your period isn't due. I needed them
although it wasnt the correct time and so did someone else on the list. I
enjoyed on of my kids Veggie Tales CDs because my brain was too foggy for adult
music, and I enjoyed kicking my legs to this. I also took a Harry Potter book
for the same reason. I find when I am sick ( or in this case, recovering) I
need my entertainment on a little lower level than usual. And for us computer
junkies, the top if you have one is your lap top.

Question for the ladies only

This is a question for those of you who don't have children. Have any of you
thought about what it would be like to lose all this weight, then have to gain
it again for a pregnancy?
I don't have any kids but I'm seriously thinking about getting my tubes
tied... Especially now that I can fit into a size 14 pair of shorts.

Yes, the catheter goes into the urethra to drain urine. It shouldn't be too
uncomfortable. The most uncomfortable thing about it is after it's removal
sometimes there can be a slight inflammation in the urethra and urination may be
a little difficult for a couple of hours or might sting a little. Sometimes they
place catheters in the OR after the person is under.

Dear Lori Anne,
I'm so lazy when it comes to going to the GBF website (I read all my posts
in digest and hardly ever go there) but with all this talk of pictures, I
went to see what you look like. You and Jessy are both knockouts! Man,
watch out, talk about being hotter later... you'd better keep that bat with
you and not just for Jessy... hahahahaha... I keep the bat under my seat in
the car just to have it ready. Zoe, at 6, is already "feelin' her oats" and
I KNOW I'm gonna have my hands full with her!
I loved the shot of you in Coney Island. When I was a kid growing up in
Brooklyn we used to go up to the roof of my apartment building on Tuesday
nights and watch the fireworks from there. I loved Coney Island. In fact,
the last ride I ever rode in the past 25 years was the cyclone... I rode my
first ride in 25 years this year at Great Adventure. I'm so ready to bring
on Disney!

Dear Vickie,
I was extremely fortunate that my surgeon does not believe in forcing you to
lose weight prior to surgery (I gained 8 lbs. from consult to day of
surgery), but many of the surgeons do. My surgeon feels that if we could
just drop the weight like that, we wouldn't need the surgery. He's "real"
about the issues. However, that being said, I know of surgeons who demand
that you lose 10% of your excess weight or just 10 lbs. Whatever the
requirement is, if you don't meet it, they cancel the surgery date until you
do because they figure that if you can't lose the weight, you won't be
compliant afterwards. If that's how your surgeon is thinking, you may get
cancelled if you don't follow his guidelines. I hope that doesn't happen to
you and I wish you the best of luck.

Kimmie

2008-05-22 04:40:19

Dear Kimmie,
I understand completely how you feel. I went all through school and
graduated college and went into my first long-term relationship years ago.
I have several nieces and nephews and did not need to "complete myself" by
having my own child. I got on the fast track in my career and was
completely happy with my life as it was. After I divorced my first husband,
I was single for 10 years. When I turned 39, I met my husband and we
married a year later. When he started mentioning starting a family, I
looked at him and said, "are you nuts? These eggs are OLD!" And that was
the end of it as far as I was concerned. I am also a big wuss when it comes
to pain and hospitals and, from what I hear, the pain of childbirth is a
fearsome thing. A few years into our marriage, he let me know just how
badly he wanted a child. We wound up adopting our daughter. There's no
reason at all that if you want a child in the future, you can't go the same
route we took. Knowing your mind now (where you know you're not the mommy
type) is a good thing, but that attitude may change at a later date. Just
know that if you decide to tie your tubes, you are not "cutting off" your
chances of being a mom later, if your attitude changes. Do what you feel is
right for you.

Heidi

2008-05-22 02:18:41

Dear Heidi,
Independent of whether or not my pcp was in favor of weightloss surgery, if
I wasn't comfortable with him or didn't like his manner, I'd switch. It's
so important to have a good rapport with our doctors. I can't stand having
someone treat me that I don't like to deal with. They don't have to be my
best friend, but I do have to feel comfortable with who I use. If that's
one of your issues, then I would switch and I would switch to someone who
has knowledge of wls and can do adequate follow-up for afterwards. If your
pcp (currently) is not in favor of the surgery, chances are his follow-up
will stink also). Just my not-so-humble opinion.

Hello Everyone! I've lurked long enough, it's time for me to come out
of hiding. I've been around for about a month now and I want to say
Thanks to each and every one of you that post on this site. You are
WONDERFUL! I'm just beginning my journey and I have learned so much
from all of you!
Let me introduce myself. My name is Kathy, I'm 30, single, from
Hanover,PA. I have my first consult on Wed. 7/16 with Dr. Monk in
York,PA. I have heard great things about him and I am very excited to
get started. My appt was originally on 9/10 and called every week to
see if they had a cancellation. Lucky me!!! I know that my insurance
covers the surgery, I just need a letter of necessity. I don't think
I should have a problem getting that. I am currently at 312lbs with
my highest being 331 about 2 years ago. I'm 5'10" at at last check my
BMI was @45.
I have alot of people supporting me. My family and friends are the
greatest. I know that I am blessed since I have read that others have
not been as lucky to have those they love most support them. I know
there will be some out there that will not agree with what I am doing
and well, to them I say...
'Your opinion of me is none of my business!!! '
I thank you all again for your wonderful words of wisdom! I will keep
on reading your posts faithfully and keep you posted as I continue my
journey!
Take care!
Kathy B.
Just beginning!

Hey, sorry I'm a little late at getting to posts; however you asked for new
focus on the eating situation. Although your doctor may not postpone your
surgery if you do not lose the weight, the thing to remember about this surgery,
is that you only have that "window" of opportunity for the rapid weight loss...
it will get harder, and the weight loss will slow down. By overindulging
prior to surgery, or gaining weight, all your going to do is add more to the
work
you are going to have to do after the surgery and it will make it that much
harder to get to goal. Of course, I am talking the talk more than walking
it...i gained 3 lbs before my surgery..but they say, hindsight is 20/20. I
thought I would never be able to have these foods again so i pigged out..but now
i
can eat everything i was pigging out on before, and i regret that. I wish I
could have been like Lori Anne (((((lori anne))))) and worked hard towards
getting to my goal before I even had the surgery. She will get to her goal that
much quicker because of her perseverance.
Anywyas, that is my 2 cents worth, and believe me I know..its easier said
than done!

New Group Member Intro and Questions

2008-05-21 07:36:28

Hello Group,
My name is Dan and I am a teacher in a small community in
Northern California. I have decided to get WLS becauyse I do not
like were my life is going and after failing with just about every
diet known to mankind I feel like this is my only option. I am
having many of the health problems that I have read about in the
forum and the loss of quality of life is killing me. Plus, I want
to be around to see my kids have kids, lots of selfish reasons, but
I will be honest and admit that it has been a pretty selfish
decision for me. My wife has been a saint, she is such a blessing
to me. She is supporting me 100%. I am getting to the point where
I will complete my pre-screening tests by the end of the monoth,
(what a grueling, pain in the @#$%$# process). I hope to have a
date set by the end of the summer when I go back to school.
My question is this - who did you tell at work that you actually
had the procedure? Different people handle this news completely
diffedrently. For every post in a web site or forum about the
support that some received there is an equally horrid story of
people losing friends or being ostracized for going through the
procedure. People have lost friends, or worse, over this
procedure. I live in a small community where all of the teachers
are well known, so anything out of the ordinary is grist for the
rumor mill. THe community is one thing, but how do you deaal with
colleagues? Once the weight starts coming off the questions will
begin - how did you handle it? The extremes are either to be a
total big mouth and shout it from the mountaintops, or try to be
totally spy-like. What are the alternatives?
Thanks for being so open here - I appreciate the info that I am
getting in this forum. I WILL get this procedure come Hell or high
water, and I know that you will be with me - thanks again.
Dan

Thanks again everyone of you

Search for Kaiser Doctor

2008-05-20 11:58:19

Hello, My name is Cindy and I don't know if I have ever posted here
before but here goes.....
If anyone out there is in the San Diego, CA area and can recommend a
Kaiser doctor that is WLS friendly I would greatly appreciate it.
I had surgery in February of last year but that was at UCSD when I
had Pacificare insurance. I now have Kaiser and a large need for
plastic surgery. I went to my Mothers's primary at Kaiser, because
he is the only one I know anything about, but almost the first thing
out of his mouth was that he was anti-gastric bypass. He said it
wouldn't be a problem now that I was post-op but I just didn't feel
like I could ask for a referal for Plastic Surgery after that.
If anyone out there has any suggestions I appreciate it.
Thanks,
Cindy

To Kimbery Greer

2008-05-19 02:04:31

Hi Kimberly,
Yes, I do believe I mentioned that I'm looking for a "miracle" of
sorts. I lost my job years ago due to the development of Carpal Tunnel
Syndrome, and my employers bad Workman's Comp Insurance issues. They
didn't need another employee with a serious condition. I ultimately
got fired and spent the following summer looking for work. I have
degenerative disk disease too. I couldn't pass any physicals. No one
would hire me, so I decided to go to school. I didn't even finish high
school prior. I've been in college ever since. My theory was that if I
wind up in a wheel chair, I can still teach.
Meanwhile, I tried to get disability a couple times, but only for
the purpose of getting a hang tag (I have difficulty walking), and
some sort of insurance.
I've been denied twice. I have since learned that even if I were
approved, I'd still have to wait two years for the insurance coverage.
I have a friend on disability who got WLS. He has lost over 200# so
far. He has sort of falled off the earth too. We don't see much of him
anymore. It's his choice.
I go to a clinic for low income families, and individuals with no
insurance. It's on a sliding scale fee basis. To me, it's almost free.
However, they can't help with surgical issues such as WLS. Despite my
personal physicians referral to GET WLS, the people she referred me to
for help say "...it's elective." Well, I don't "elect" to die, ya know?
I have a ton of debt with student loans too. It's going to be like
a house payment after I graduate. I've applied for jobs everywhere,
but I can't even get an interview. However, I don't usually get past
the first meeting even if I do. I didn't plan for this to happen.
I'm going to reapply for disability again. I have my doubts. The
thought of all the paperwork makes me cringe, but I'll do it. I'm not
trying to get the insurance based on an inability to work. As I said,
I just want to find help with medical insurance until I can become
gainfully employed.
Thanks for your response. If you have any other ideas to share,
bring 'em on! It's very helpful.

Regarding SSI, & disability etc.
My doctors have been giving me temporary disability hang tags for over
2 years consecutively.
I'm not trying to get out of paying off my student loans or to not
find work. I WANT to work. However, I'm not widely accepted (boy did
that sound like a pun) when I show up for interviews.
I'm also Not saying that WLS will get me a job, but it will give me

I simply am trying to find help to get WLS as I have been advised to
do so. I agree with my doctor 100%.

Any company that has individual policies also has the right to reject
any applicant based on their overall health/weight. I lose on the
weight issue right from the start. In fact, it was always my first
question so I could avoid a lot of wasted time filling out papers.
I am a "non-traditional" student. My oldest son is in high school. I
know it's hard to tell from looking at me (j/k), but I'm over 40.
My current b/f has wanted me to marry him for some time. His newest
pitch is "I have insurance!"
I don't want to marry him for insurance, so I refused on that point.
That's not to say I won't marry him. Just not for insurance.
I also think he might Wise up at some point and move on. He is younger
than I am and I have issues with our age difference. I also think he
might be crazy for wanting to be with me. That claim, he denies.
He is the Only guy I've ever been with, including my ex husband, who
ever said he loves my kids. My kids really love this guy too. That's
how he hooked me. I think he's a "keeper." I just want to give us both
more time.

Hi Lori,
You brought back fond memories about being 25, no need to
apologize. I just thought you'd have a better picture of what I'm up
against if you knew my rough age etc.
My bf is pretty cool. He is half my size and says he's crazy about
me. I think he's just crazy. He "doesn't see" my weight issue either.
That means he's blind too. My kids love him. So do I.
I just wish the bf was older. Look at Demi & Ashton. At least she
is built like a 20 year old. Do you think they would ever marry? I
think it's doubtful. I feel controlled by societal issues. Sheesh.
Thanks for your response,

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the info. However, I have been denied enough times to
feel pretty hopeless. However, I never applied on the basis that I was
obese. That would have won, I'm sure.
I'm told that I might have problems getting disability because of
the fact that I have student loans. A LOT of them. Like I said, I'm
Not trying to get out of my debt. I went to school for a reason. Oh,
that's another reason they deny me, because I could go to school.
Well, it's art school. I have my own studio and in it I have a couch
where I often have to lie down or sleep because of my medication. I
can't stand or sit for any length of time. I wind up with pinched
nerves and resulting muscle spasms in my back. After I have a spasm, I
wind up sleeping on the sofa for 3 days because the medication for
that completely knocks me out. I'm glad my kids are older and can feed
themselves when that happens. When I was in undergrad, and had to take
all the core requirements (class time) I had to take breaks
occasionally to stretch my back. My back though is FAR worse than it
ever has been, and I weigh more than I ever have as well.
There are no programs that my doctor is aware of for helping people
with weight issues. There is ONE organization that helps people of low
income or underinsured individuals with surgery needs, but they see
WLS as an "elective" procedure. I didn't "elect" to be like this. I'm
appealing their decision. I just have to keep trying. It's very
frustrating. I'm happy for all of you who have made it to surgery.
God Bless every one of you!

protein shakes

2008-05-15 04:38:16

Dear Denise,
I use Champion Pure Stack Whey protein that I get from muscledawg.com and I
pay $30 for a 5 lbs. jug including shipping. You will get it within two
days of ordering from them. The container lasts me a couple of months if I
have one every day or longer if I skip a few days here and there. I believe
it makes 48 shakes per 5 lbs. of powder and it's very tasty. I usually get
the chocolate, but it comes in vanilla, strawberry (tried them both and
they're okay) and now I'm waiting for samples of their new flavors,
moccachino and banana which I ordered from wlssuccess.com -- if you're not
sure you're gonna like something, before you buy a huge jug of it, I suggest
visiting wlssuccess.com or vitalady.com and check out their protein powder
samples first. It took me A LOT of tasting to finally settle on one I
liked, because some of them are quite nasty... just a suggestion.

Good morning,
Getting disablilty is tough, but not impossible. Part of the trick
to getting approved is knowing how to arrange and submit the
documentation. I'm not talking about your paperwork alone, but
about your doctor's reports as well. The women that handles all the
paperwork with my PCP has been complimented by the regional SS
office on how clear, concise, and direct her submissions are. She
consequently has a pretty good track record in helping her clinic's
patients get approved. That doesn't mean everyone gets approved, of
course. There still must be overriding medical/mental concerns. It
just helps to have somebody who understands the bureacray and what
information to provide and in what format. Unfortunately, you have
no control over how your doctor's office may submit the paperwork
short of changing doctors.
For that reason, you might consider hiring a lawyer to appeal any
denials, one that specializes in SS issues. Many will not charge
for an initial consultation, and they could tell you if you have a
legitimate case. Many will also take payment from any settlement
you eventually get from your claim. Like I said, you may benefit
from utilizing someone who really knows the system well.
Concerning your WLS itself...I don't know what state you live in,
but many states offer a program offering to pay for the surgery with
the intention of returning you to the workforce. They see it as an
investment in you...after all, if you're not working, how can you be
paying them taxes, right? :-) I had my surgery through Arkansas
Rehabilitation Services, which is the program I described here.
Since my weight had led me to other health issues and disabilities
preventing work, my surgery, initial hospital stay, and all other
fees were paid. It can be a long, arduous process getting approved
(paperwork, interviews, more paperwork, medical and psych
evaluations with the state's doctors, MORE paperwork, etc.), but it
might work for you. If you are not sure about the existence of such
a program in your state, your doctor's office can tell you about
it. (It was my surgeon's office that recommended the program to me
after my insurance repeatedly denied me.)
Whatever happens, don't get discouraged, and keep trying to find
that "miracle".

quitting smoking

2008-05-13 17:31:33

You must quit smoking before surgery, for your own well-being.
Clearing out your lungs before surgery will only speed your
recovery. And it doesn't take that long, either. Major improvement
can be seen and felt after just one week of not smoking. Don't quit
quitting, either. If you slip-up today, quit again tomorrow. Use
every tool at your disposal. Gum, patches, lozenges (they are
pretty narly-tasting, but as long as you don't keep them on your
tongue, just put between your cheek and gum, as they say, they are
really effective). Remember, some folks are more addicted than
others, and just because you can't go cold-turkey doesn't make you a
failure. Remember, you want to be a quitter!! And a loser too,
right? Don't quit quitting, it really is about quitting every day,
all over again sometimes. Keep trying, you will succeed. Just
don't quit quitting.

Thats a really good question! I personally did not want to tell anyone about
my surgery, other than a few close friends; however, I told one person too
many apparantly as EVERYONE knew before I left it seemed. I am normally a
very private person, especially when it came to issues with my weight. For the
most part, I did not have any "horror" stories... there were some people that
looked rather increduluous when I told them I could not have sugar anymore, and
at the amount of food I'd be able to eat, but people were fairly supportive.
Since my surgery, I have had people (the few that didn't know---well probably
more than a few, I work with over 1,300 other people) ask me how I have
managed to lose so much weight. Having so many questions from people before,
talking about it on here and more with my close friends has helped I guess. I
have
just been honest and told them I had the surgery in February.
The only thing I'm not always comfortable with, is the feeling that I am sort
of living in a glass bowl. Like everyone is watching everything I heat (how
much I eat) and how much weight i've lost.. and that is a lot of pressure.
Since my surgery, I have known at least 6 other girls who in my area who have
opted to have the surgery (I work for BCBS, and our insurance covers the
surgery, pre-op, post-op, facility everything for a $25 inpatient deductible).
Of
course, I think they are realizing this was not a good thing for them, and they
are making it a contract exclusion on our plan effective Jan 1st, so I'm glad
I got it when I did. Anyways, I have found it easier to share my experience
with people when they ask..... what I struggle with now, (and you're fortunate
not to have this problem) is dating. How/when do you tell someone your dating
about this, or explain food choices or lack of food..hehe. Any suggestions
for that I'd be appreciative!

Melody,
I'm probably a little late in adding my 2 cents (I'm behind on posts as

the group, I have been thinking about getting my mother to join too :)
Sarah,
I just read your post that you got your surgery date next Monday!
Congratuations girl..that is exciting! I also had open. It really is worth it
when you
come out on the other side..but it can be rough the first few days. My scar
goes from the sternum to just above my belly button (about 4 inches maybe a
lttle more). The staple marks have all but disappeared, but of course the scar
is still huge... no bikinis here...BUT its a trade off (i'll just go for the
backless..hehe). As for what to wear, I still had my drain tube when I came
home from the hospital. I bought some button down gowns (mumu's i guess) to
wear, but I only wore one home from the hospital. My thing is PJ pants, I love
them. The whole time I was off work that is what I wore. Lane Bryant usually
has some cute ones up to a 26/28 (what I wore) and some extended sizes in
their catalog i think. They were great b/c you can tuck the drain tube into the
elastic band and it stays put :) Anyways, if you have any questions or want to

pain meds & lap/open differences

2008-05-09 18:03:02

I definitely agree about the pain meds. I had percoset and flexeril(muscle
relaxer). Two days and 30 percosets later I had to call my surgeon and get more
pain meds. This time it's loratab and flexeril. I can tell I'm getting better
daily, but know I need them because when I'm a little over on time taking one --
I start hurting pretty bad and feel nauseous.
I had my surgery 1/2 lap, then open rny because my small intestines were
uncooperative. My surgeon said the inner pain would be the same for lap or
open, but that the open it a little worse because of the length of the incision
and that healing time. He keeps lap patients in as long as his open patients.
My surgeon is only takes out the gall bladder if you have an open, and he puts a
silastic ring around the top of the stomach if you have open.

First, I'm so sorry to hear you have been denied. It sounds like you have a
basis for appeal.... Did you get a copy of your doctor's letter? I can try
and help you if you would like, feel free to email me privately at
badgrl21f@... and I'll help you with a letter if you need. Can't guarantee
anything,
but I do work for BCBS (TX, but we are merged with IL and have the same
criteria basis for approval)
Secondly, the fact that you have COBRA should in no way affect the decision.
The medical reviewers do not even have that information. The only
information they have is what is submitted by your physician and/or you. The
customer
service representative, who does not make the decision, would be the only one
to have access to that. The only concern I have for you, is if your coverage
is about to end next month, will you have the time to get the surgery performed
before it terminates? Also, even if you are, you do realize you will be
responsible for your follow up care after it cancels?
Anyways, best of luck to you whatever you decide to do, and I'll be keeping
you in my thoughts :)

I have heard that insurance companies are hoping that
you give up but when they see that you have appealed more then once
they will approve. If for any reason to get you off their back!! So
appeal!
I realize I may be biased, but since I work for the insurance company that
denied her predetermination, I can assure you, they do not just deny the claims
to see if a member will appeal. It may seem that way to some who are not
involved in the process, but I handle inquiries and predeterminations for all
types of medical procedures every day. Unfortunately, there are set criteria
which have to be met to have something like WLS covered, and there are several
MD's which review cases. They all have different expertises and experience and
may review the situation differently; therefore, it may be denied by one and a
different MD (which is required if you appeal, they will not send it to the dr
who made the first decision) may overturn the decision. Also, the
documentation provided by the doctor may not have been sufficient enough for
them to
determine the medical criteria was met, so it is denied. To appeal a denial,
additional information needs to be sent in, so sometimes this additional
information will be enough to prove Medical necessity (MN). Of course, I can
only
speak from my experience with the company I work for and not any other insurance
company out there, but considering I am one of those people that have to write
the denial letters and send them to our members I do somewhat take a
statement such as that personally, because I would never do such a hurtful
thing. Not
to mention, that would be highly unethical. I would venture other insurance
companies would have similar processes and ethical standards.

Dear Tanya,
Call back your insurance company and ask them exactly which criteria you
didn't meet. Physically it sounds as if you meet the standard (BMI over 40,
comorbidities, etc.). Perhaps you didn't present them with all the
documentation they are looking for. Did you have to prove a track record of
failed diets? There's an attorney online. He's a WLS patient and advocate
for people who've been denied and he has an excellent track record. He's in
California, but he's licensed in every state and he usually gets the denials
overturned through the mail. His name is Walter Lindstrom and you can find
him at obesitylaw.com and, from what I hear, his fee is very reasonable. He
can tell you if you've got a good case (I think you do) or not.
Also, I believe, (and I could be wrong) that if you've applied for something
and it's been denied, if the appeal is overturned even after you're no
longer covered, they have to cover the service because you applied before
your coverage ran out. Any insurance people out there who can verify this?
Dear Marian,

3.Biggest Reason for wanting surgery. I want to prevent any health issues.
4.Who did you tell about the surgery? My daughter and my boss
5.What is one thing you plan on doing that you could never do before the

6.Food or Drink you miss the most? I don't plan on missing anything

First of all, congrats on your upcoming date, that is wonderful!! :) Second,
thanks for the kind response, and I can totally relate! Of course, since it
has become so popular at work, I don't feel as much pressure, but I was still
one of the first in my area to have it done, so I do kind of feel like the
poster child for WLS, which I never would have thought. However, I find myself
answering questions about the surgery, my progress and doctors every day now.
I also have been getting compliments on my new skinniness..hehe But i take it
in stride. It is definately an ego boost. However, I have bene in my size
18's for almost a month now, which is disheartening. However, I dont' ever
remember being a 16.. so i may be on a bit of a plateau..they say sometimes your
body gets to where it spent most of its time at and stalls... well i was an 18
for a very long time....but they are getting looser. Maybe my problem isjust
that I squeze into them too soon and have a while until they get too big. I
am trying to be patient (can't you tell) and just realizing it is going to
come off... eventually. Just want it to be N O W! Okay, yes I would like some

Unfortunately...No. If the policy is cancelled prior to the date of service,
then the service is not eligible for reimbursement. The predetermination
responses include disclaimers as well, one of them is that you "must be covered
on the date of service to be eligible for benefits".
Now, this could be different if you are referring to appeals through
litigious means. If the delay is due to court sessions, then the court (if they
overturn the insurance denial) may include in their decision that it has to be
covered, but that would be up to the ALJ or whoever is presiding.

I agree, sometimes you have to be tenacious when dealing with insurance
companies. If you could see the amount of work on my desk right now! And it
is
difficult, because you are dealing with peoples health and their money...two
very sensitive subjects! I know for myself, and the majority of the people I
work with, we all want to do everything in our power to provide the best
customer service we can. There will be some cases that are more memorable or
pull
at your heart strings more, but the problem is... there are so many checks and
balances in the insurance industry and so many regulations... sometimes our
hands are tied. For instance, WLS is a contract exclusion for the plan I
administer. They will not approve it under any circumstances. Before I had my
surgery, I handled written correspondance, and I hated sending those denial
letters. We couldn't even send them to medical for review because MN was not an
issue for a contract exclusion. now I handle escalated appeals and i still get
these occasionally...but it is the same thing. In this case, our hands are
tied..but my heart goes out to them, because I can definately relate to what
they
are going through, and how much they wnt this! However, I tend to think of
myself as a patient advocate--because really that is our job. When I receive a
grievance appeal, my job is to check every avenue possible to see if there is
any way we can allow additional benefits, or reverse the grievance
completely--and there are times when that happens and it does feel good to send
a letter
to the member with good news on it. I just try to put myself in the other
person's shoes and do what i can. that is awesome the CSR you worked with
called to see how you were doing after your surgery :)

Ok, before I even say it, I know this is gross so...the weak stomach
please beware! I had this problem occasionally beofre I had the WLS
but, I have it ALL the time now and was wondering if anyone else does
and what they do about it. Ok, here goes the grossness...when I have
a bowel movement, I vomit. Before surgery, I may have done it once or
twice a month-maybe not that often. Now, I do it EVERY time. My
gastrointestinal doctor said it was diverticulitis(??) and to eat
more fiber. Now with this surgery, I understand fiber is a no-no.
Does anyone else have any problems similar to this? If so, what do
you do?

Re:Allan

2008-05-05 20:43:22

Allan - I am a new post op 7/4/03. In the past, I have done Atkins one time
for a year and lost 45 or so. After a year I fell off the wagon and gradually
re-gained I made many attempts to re-start Atkins, but never could stick to
it over a week again. Now, post op, it is pretty easy. I really don't want
anything. Vanilla yogurt sounds good. Scrambled eggs sound tolerable. Protein
drink sounds unappealing, but not gagging. I am allowing myself a little
juice after I get 60 g protein for day, so I am not going pure atkins. My plan
is to eat 5 times per day ( even though my doctors told me 3) because each meal
is only around 100 calories. My plan is protein drink, scrambled egg,
protein drink, yogurt, then one servings of what I want within the soft food
idea.
Yesterday I only felt like eating 4 times. And I had planned to finish my
protein at the last meal. So today I am going to try protein,(22g) egg(7g) ,
protein (22 g) then yogurt (7g),then a free pick. If I get to protein, egg,
protein. yogurt. that will make 58 g, close enougth to 60 that I can have juice
or V-8 if I eat a fifth time Thats my goal. Its not hard to lay off the
carbs. Its hard to get the protein. I am back at work and could happily go
all
day with nothing but water, and believe me that is NOT like me. -- Jody
My question is that it seems like everyone begins living low carb
after the surgery but I myself have tried low carb to lose weight
before and couldnt stand it.I imagine there are many others who

Happy dancing!!! - my one-month (almost) post-op appointment

2008-05-05 05:46:24

Hi, all!
I met with my surgeon today (Dr. Lavin) and I'm so pleased to report that I've
lost 21 pounds since my surgery! I'm only 93 pounds a away from goal!!!
I'm thrilled, excited and giddy with the results. Previously, Dr. Lavin warned
me that my weight loss might be a little slower than the typical loss because I
don't have that much to lose and people with less to lose typically lose more
slowly but today he said my loss was higher than anticipated. He said I'm on
target for being under 200 by this time next month. I think my jaw dropped.
All my labs were good. A clear check-up! Plus I got the "official"
authorization to go back to my normal routine at the gym ... only words on that
... "if it hurts, stop"
I also talked up our group and Dr. Lavin said he was so glad I had mentioned it
because it would be a great resource for some of their patients that travel long
distance to their facility to have surgery.
So I'm a happy camper and I just wanted to share it with you guys!

2008-05-05 03:38:42

Today I had my appeal at the insurance office.
I took my father with me. He is a vascular surgeon.
We went before a group of 9 women all members of the insurance. One
of them was the medical director, 2 of them were from the grievance
department and the rest introduced themselves but I was too neverous
to listen.
My father told the group how I had been battling to lose weight since
I was 3 years old. He told them that he was generally opposed to
surgery but he understood that surgery was probably my only hope for
a normal, healthy life.
I looked at each one of the women and smiled at them and made eye
contact with them and did everything I was supposed to do.
One of them asked me a question - she asked if I had tried any weight
loss program in conjunction with an exercise plan and a nutritionist
and a psychologist. I told them I had. My father gave them a signed
letter saying what diets I had tried recently. We did everything
right. I even sent in pictures of myself in my bathing suit to show
them how desperately I need surgery but they said NO.
I called the State Insurance commision to appeal the insurance
decision. I can't believe it has gone this far. I am so depressed
and frustrated and for the first time I am wondering if I can
actually fight the system.
I just wanted to vent and I know that this is the best place to do it
because here I am not alone. You are all my big extended family.
Thanks in advance for reading and I know I will get replies that will
make me cry so thanks for your good wishes and support :)
I love you all and so appreciate your support!

Yummy ... wonder if my wallet can handle my newest source of protein!!!

While I was at the doctor's office today, the nurse-practitioner mentioned an
EXCELLENT way to add a high level of protein to my diet.
Smoothie King makes a new high protein smoothie called the Gladiator. Here's
the nutritional stats on it:
20 oz.
220 calories
0.4 grams of fat
1.6 grams of carbs
50.7 grams of protein
The nutritional information changes slightly with the addition of fruits (they
allow two fruits to be added). The one I had today was strawberry and papaya.
The taste was incredible and I had no problems finishing it.
The only downside is the price ... $4.50. As essential as getting protein in
is, I think I can spring for it. That leaves me with only 20 grams to acquire
(my surgeon recommends 70 grams a day).
Just thought I'd share.
