I think you are prefectly normal. Everyone is going to react differently to
food in the beginning and what they can tolerate. Just be sure to measure out
only the amount you are supposed to eat and don't go over that amount. Also,
be sure that you are taking very small bites and chewing until there is
nothing left of it before swallowing. Slowing down when you eat allows time for
your tummy to start feeling full. When I was on the soft foods, I could eat
almost 1 whole egg with cheese on top.... but sometimes it sat okay and
sometimes
it didn't. I never got sick on it, but it kinda made me not want eggs. As
for the milk, I'm jealous you can drink 2 cups of it! I love milk..but since
the surgery I can only drink a few sips or I regret it *sigh*..... I think the
volume is fine, your not going to stretch your pouch, but be sure to take only
small sips (even if their continuous) as a large sip would be the equivalent
to a large bit of food as far as producing an uncomfortableness in your tummy
and/or getting air in your tummy..yuck! Best of luck to you and please keep
us posted on how your doing!!

Hey a new recipe Strawberry Vanilla Parfait

2008-02-29 07:55:40

Hello All
I was just sitting here and I decided to go and make myself a little treat
but I wanted it to be healthy and non-fattening, and I came up with this and it
is so good and it is WLS friendly.
Strawberry Vanilla Parfait
Ingredients
1 box Vanilla fat-free sugar-free instant reduced calorie Jell-O Pudding the
kind that you wire whisk to set.
2 cups of COLD skim milk or skim milk plus or 1% or 2% milk
4-5 large or medium sized strawberries
1 -4 packets of Splenda or a good sprinkle of the boxed Slpenda variety
5-6 4 oz cups either glass or plastic cups will do (I used my old yogurt
cups the 4 oz kinds like from Dannon La creme or any cup will do)
A wire whisk or my favorite an electric mixer.
Preparation
Step 1
Prepare the pudding as per directions in a bowl pour the 2 cups of milk and
slowly wire whisk the pudding folding in into the milk. I like to do this step
first and then switch to my mixer to thoroughly blend the pudding. The
pudding will thicken as it is mixed. Mix for two minutes and then hehehe lick
off
the mixing utensils and set the pudding aside in the refrigerator while you go
to step two.
Step 2
Wash of the 405 strawberries and dry them and slice some broadly into thin
slices for the layers and slice some into quartered slices for garnish.
Sprinkle the strawberry slices with the splenda I used the box Splenda for like
a
teaspoon full of product or you can use the packets. This takes the "edge" off
of any tart tasting strawberries and set them aside in the refrigerator and
retrieve the pudding.
Step 3
Arrange your cups and take a tablespoon and put approximately one tablespoon
of pudding into each cup for the first layer and smooth it down. Each layer
will be about 1 inch thick or less and then get the strawberries out of the
refrigerator and put two of the broad slices in each cup to make a layer.
Repeat
this process of pudding layers and strawberry layers until each cup is full
of parfait. Top off the parfait with the quartered strawberry slices for
garnish and set the cups in the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes or you can eat
them
right away.
That's it VIOLA a nice easy breezy summertime no mess, no fuss, portioned
controlled treat that the whole family can enjoy. You can even spruce it up for
a more elegant presentation by using beautiful glasses and then a slice of
strawberry on the edge of the rim of the glass and a matching slice of kiwi.
I also suggest eating the whole concoction with a baby spoon to further slow
us down so we can really enjoy it. This has been a recipe from a pre-op and
please feel free to add to it or make it even more WLS friendly. I just made
mine and I loved it because it has been a heat wave here in NY and this is a
nice alternative to the other high fat high calorie treats that are easily
available. Who was the devil who invented ice cream trucks LOL enjoy :o)

Aspartame Users!

2008-02-29 03:23:12

*crosspost*
I was a diehard Crystal Lite drinker, figuring that because it was 0
calories and counted as part of my daily fluid intake I was doing
myself good. After hitting a looooong plateau and talking with my
surgeon I was told that aspartame can actually slow weightloss. I
also did some reading and (according to Dr. Atkins and others) found
this to be a common belief.
If you are finding it hard to lose weight and are relying on drinks
that contain aspartame, you may want to reevaluate your choices. I
switched from Crystal Lite to Propel (by Gatorade) and Fruit2O. Both
of these drinks are sweetened with sucralose (Splenda), which does
not seem to carry the same side affects as aspartame and other
artificial sweeteners. Propel is good, but does contain some carbs,
whereas Fruit20 (a VeriFine product) has 0 Carbs.
I should add that once I refrained from drinking Crystal Lite and
added an extra 1/2 mile on my bike, plus one additional protein shake
per day, I broke my plateau and am now only 3 lbs away from hitting
that century mark.

Did I stretch my pouch or what????

2008-02-29 00:43:52

OK guys,
I need a little advice from those of you who have had surgery.
I, like most of you, am paranoid about stretching my little pouch.
So, here is my question. I am 3 weeks post-op and already I have no
problem getting almost 2 cups of milk down in about 15-20 minutes.
And I can drink about 3 cups of water in 10 minutes. I am eating
scrambled eggs right now which is my only semi-solid food for three
more weeks (per Doctors orders)and I can eat about 1/2 of the
scambled egg and then I start, and ONLY start to feel it. Is this
about right? Or do I need to slow down, especially with my fluids?
Common sense tells me that fluids would go right thru the stoma, so
even if my pouch could still only hold 2 tablespoons I should be ok
drinking 2 cups at a time but common sense has never been my strong
point ha ha .......I hope someone can help me, unfortunatly, I have
nothing to base my progress on, and I am not sure what is normal.
Thanks for any help!

protein drinks

2008-02-28 13:26:01

Hi Caroline,
If you have a vitamin shoppe or GNC local to you, they carry the isopure
drinks. I've only tried the blue one (raspberry flavor) but when I started
telling my friends that I was drinking this, people came out of the woodwork
telling me, "oooh, I LOVE that drink, but try this flavor!" Apparently all
the flavors are good. It comes in passion fruit, apple melon, grape, blue
raspberry, orange, fruit punch, or, if you're buying a case, you can get it
as a variety. A case of 12 goes for $34.99 at www.loseforless.com plus
shipping. At vitamin shoppe, they are about $3 per bottle, but when you
figure out that if you drink 1/2 per day, your boosting your protein by 20
grams, I think it's worth it. It's 190 calories, 0 carbs, 0 sugars, 0 fat
and 5 grams of L-glutamine. The thing I like about them is they are not
thick like the protein shakes I mix, they are colored, but clear, with the
consistency that's even smoother than crystal light. Another thing I'm
doing so the water doesn't get so boring all the time is I'm adding DaVinci
flavored syrups to my water and making them flavored. Much cheaper than
buying fruit 2-0 or propel all the time.
live each day like it's your last... love like you've never been hurt...

LOST........

2008-02-28 10:42:52

I REALLY don't know what to do at this point of my life. My stepmom
and I are not getting along at all. For a while, I was working with
her and her business. Now, I've been dropped from their little
business because of this fight we've had, and I lost her trust and
respect for me.
You see, when I get frustrated or angry, I tend to just walk off
without telling anyone. Of course I do come back, but not for a
while. I know this is one of my bad habbits that I have to break,
because it gets me into a lot of trouble, and it gets everyone
worried as well.
I'm trying to lose weight. I've had the Gastric Bypass Weight Loss
Surgery. The highest weight I've been was 550 lbs. I went in for
surgery at 397 lbs on June 7 of last year. Now I'm down to 250 lbs.
Which is great!
It's really difficult for me to keep my motivation up to lose weight
especially when I'm bored or depressed. Even though I know I would
get sick when I overeat, I still do it anyways. And it's tough,
especially when living with people who don't have a weight problem,
and can eat all they want.
Back to the fight between my stepmom and I.........Because I just
left to go for a walk without telling anyone, she's actually given me
a punishment. I can no longer use their computer which is the only
computer that has access to the net. She has put huge X's on pieces
of paper and taped it on their computer. My dad is going to
eventually get my computer connected to the net.
I know disrespecting my stepmom did hurt her. I apologized, but she
didn't accept my apology. I just thought I would do something worth
my time, while everyone was eating.
Now I'm mad as H@LL!!! I've even cried in public and made a total
fool of myself. I've had a major panic attack. I almost destroyed
our home when no one was home this morning. I've been binging on
food like crazy, and making myself sick, which is not a pleasant
feeling at all. I even come to the point where I tell myself to not
eat at all, but then I eat and hurt myself anyways. I don't know
what else to do???
I can't do anything fun that I desire. My stepmom hogs the computer
now as if there was no tomorrow, and doesn't give a d@mn at all. And
let me add that I'm 23, so I'm an adult. So what's up with this???
In the past, my stepmom and I were really good friends. She was so
much like a mother to me, I loved her. We'd run into a lot of
problems where we'd save each other's @ss, or cover each other's
@ss. To tell you the truth "she" was the one who helped me to get
from 550 down to 397 lbs. Now, we both ran into this fight. And
this hasn't been the only fight we've had.
To tell you the truth, we're now at the point where we've both had it
up to here with each other. Sometimes I actually regret hooking her
and my dad with each other. We don't even talk to each other
anymore. She'd talk and laugh to everyone else but me. Even though
it hurts when she does that, I try to carry on with my business.
For God Sakes, she's too strict on me!!! I don't have much of a
social life, so I don't get to go out as much as I'd like to. Then
on the other hand, even though she's a strict person, she does have a
bad temper and takes almost everything to heart, she can be such a
cool loving person. She has helped the family, she'd prepare nice
meals for me and my dad, and she'd help keep the house in order.
And these are one of the reasons why I do overeat. My parents expect
me to be all perfect with my diet too. My stepmom have people
watching me over my back to see if I'm cheating. But right now, I
don't really care anymore. My stepmom took away one thing that
actually took my mind off overeating on food, now this $%&* has to
happen to me. Don't get me wrong, I do get out and about to
exercise. I enjoy going for long walks and swim.
I used to be real happy and honored to have her as my stepmom, but
now, I wish she'd leave.
Was all of this really meant to happen??? Is it possible this
problem can be resolved? What should I do? This huge feeling I have
within me feels extremely terrible and painful, and I want to get rid
of it. It's really killing me emotionally and physically! Any
advice?

Intro

2008-02-28 04:06:25

Hi everybody,
I have been lurking here for about a month and I would like to introduce
myself. My name is Pat, I am 59 years old (physically) and have been
dieting since I was 10 years old. :-\ I am in the process of being
approved for Lap RNY surgery with Dr. Pamela Foster in Burlingame, CA.
I have diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, hypothyroid, crushed discs,
depression, arthritis, and fibromyalgia. It's about time to do
something about my wieght so I can be able to care for my husband. We
live and travel in our motorhome full time, that is we have no other
home. Right now we need to stay in Sacramento because of my husbands
health problems. Is there anyone else in this area? I would love to
talk with you.

Another Drinking Water Question

2008-02-27 09:35:03

I am having a terrible time drinking my water too. The reason I am having so
much trouble is that I am not able to drink very much at work and I work 8
hours a day, 5 days a week. The reason I am having a hard time drinking at work
is because I am a RN in a recovery room and I cant have something to drink in
my area - so it isnt an option to keep something to drink at my desk and
drink all day long. I get two 15 minute breaks and a 30 minute lunch and those
are the only times I get to drink. I am able to run to the water fountain for a
few seconds a few times a day, but that only helps me get in about 6 ounces.
Any suggestions?
~ami~

Suggestions Please

2008-02-27 08:42:38

I have really been discouraged lately because I have lost little to
nothing and my inches continue to rise. I have heard the suggestion
of writing everything down and keeping track of my calories but I
have not found that I can eat anything exciting and keep up with that
honestly. I need a listing of normal food combinations that has the
caloric intake breakdown of them.
In addition, I find myself just settling on not eating at all because
I am too busy with work, kids, and home to stop and experiment with
different foods. I barely have time to get in my protein, or
supplements. I know I must, so the lectures are not needed! I just
need some organizational tools that have helped others that I might
be able to adopt, and or no brainer food combinations

Drinking Water

2008-02-27 03:55:22

It has been very hard to eat much of anything at one
time, and of course since I cant drink when I eat, how
is everyone getting all the water that you need to
drink in there somewhere? I want so badly to just
take a bottled water and gulp it down, but of course
thats not possible. It is sooooo hard to drink and I
might be able to fit 16 ounces in a day. How am I
supposed to drink more?

but I am still nervous about having surgery again. Please keep me in your

WLS Dating

2008-02-26 11:14:49

I'm curious about something. Has there been a WLS dating group
established. Sometimes it is hard for those who have not had the
surgery to understand the issues that the people face that have had
WLS. If you know of any please let me know or respond back. I'd
love to hear about them.
Take care and be very good to yourself,

214 lbs lost forever

Dear Caroline

2008-02-26 07:44:12

Hey sweetie,
I know you like to get your protein from food, but do you mind if I suggest
adding a protein shake or isopure or something like that? 40-50 grams is
just not enough. You NEED to be doing minimum of 60 on a daily basis and I
know, for me, I can't get that much food in, so I have to boost my levels
with a shake or protein drink or something. I can't stand the bars, except
for the u-turn and detour, but I can't eat more than a third at a time and
the carbs are too high, so I've gone back to a shake or an isopure in
addition to my food. That kicks me between 60 and 90 grams per day. You
will find your weight loss speed up dramatically if you boost your protein
level. On the isopure, even if you drink 1/2 bottle at a time, you're
giving yourself an additional 20 grams right there. The bottles I get are
20 oz. (added to your water intake) and 40 grams of protein, so I just split
the bottle to two times per day when I drink it and I sail above the 60
grams I need. If it's too sweet for you, just cut it with some water (but I
love it and so does Zoe, just the way it is).
Also, how's your water intake going? Are you doing at least 64 oz.? I
expect to see a difference in my weight loss again now that I've joined
Curves. I blew right through the workout yesterday. I have to do it a
little differently than most in order to keep up with the circuit though.
Due to my amputation, I can't jump or do the kicks and squats in between, so
I just move from machine to machine, keeping two locations empty behind me
(I go when it's slow) and this way I've got the time to get on and off that
I need. For me, that's the hardest part. Getting off the machines.
Getting on and doing the work is a breeze. Getting off is a bit
troublesome, but it's definately doable, so I'm really thrilled.
Anyway kickstart your metabolism by raising up the protein levels honey. It
will be better for you. You'll see...
live each day like it's your last... love like you've never been hurt...

Not losing fast enough

2008-02-25 05:56:26

Hello Everyone,
My name is Beth. I had rny on April 29, 2003. I
weighed 266 just before surgery, and now 2 months
later I have only lost 32 pounds. That is only 16
pounds a month. It just seems like I should be
losing faster. After 3 weeks I saw my doctor and he
said that I need to eat more often, every three hours,
that I probably wasnt eating often enough. At three
weeks, I had lost 15 pounds. Well, since then I have
been eating mostly every three hours, I have been
eating low fat, and absolutely no sugar (I'm scared to
even try that), and I am still losing too slow. I
have been as heavy as 285, lost some, gained some,
even lost down to 200 pounds. What scares me the most
after having this surgery, is that I wont lose enough.
I have lost weight at this pace before with many
other diets. Am I crazy and this is normal? Has
anyone else thought these thoughts, and if you were
losing slow too, was there anything you could do to
lose it faster?

Posting messages is okay, I guess, but there is something about
actual instant communication that just seems more personal. I guess i
just like the instant gratification. Patience isn't my strong suite,
so waiting for a surgery date is killing me, and any support and chat
i can get helps with the very long wait is greatly appreciated.

Misti...there is nothing you can do about written exclusions in the
insurance policy but there might be some way to get around them.
Talk to your surgeon (if you have one) about whether there is the
possibility of "creative bookeeping"...i.e. using different codes to
circumvent the exclusion
I would not recommend this. Insurance fraud is illegal, and if you find a
doctor who is unethical enough to do something like this, and risk his
reputation and career, I would be highly suspicious of him playing with my
insides. I
can understand your frustration about this being a policy exclusion, as I
work for BCBS on a plan that excludes the surgery (although as employees it is
covered-thankfully!), unfortunately, if it is specifically written as an
exclusion there is not much you can do. Even if the surgery is medically
necessary,
they hide behind the exclusion. Obtaining other insurance, that would cover
it, can be very difficult because to obtain health insurance you have to go
through the underwriting process, and being overweight can sometimes keep you
from qualifying. Short of you or hubby finding a new job that has insurance
with
no pre-existing, you may have a difficult time geting insurance to cover.
But don't lose hope! There may be an insurance company out there for you, or
there may be a way to obtain a loan for medical services, or a way may come
along for you to self-pay. At least with self-pays, the hospital and surgeons
usually offer huge discounts, and bump you to the front of the line b/c they
don't have to deal with the insurance beauracracies. Best of luck to you!!

My Introduction

Hi Everyone - since I just posted my first message, I thought I would
introduce myself. I am Karyl - I live in the southern suburbs of Chicago. I am
48
years old, married, 3 sons and an insurance agent. I have been overweight for
what seems like my entire life and my current BMI is 50. I've been on every
diet known to man and then some. I am in the process of
investigating/thinking/pondering/researching Gastric Bypass surgery. I have
been reading prior
posts and every bit of information I can put my hands on.
To anyone in my general geographic vicinity - any recommendations on doctors
and/or hospitals? I have requested info from a few major places but there is
nothing like actual personal recommendations!
I appreciate everyone's help in my journey ....
Enjoy the weekend!

Muttie/Liz - 8 months post-op

2008-02-21 12:01:55

Dear Muttie,
I had my open stapled surgery (RNY) in September 2002. What, specifically,
would you like to know? We are a very open and sharing group. No question
is to silly or too personal, so feel free to ask whatever it is you'd like
to know.
Dear Liz,
It's great that you caught onto these problems quickly. B vitamin
deficiency can cause irreversible neurological problems and, trust me, you
don't want to go there. You should be having bloods drawn every 3 months,
and try to follow the trends so you can see exactly how you're doing.
You'll be able to tell, this way, if you're getting enough absorption of the
vitamins/minerals you're taking. Don't just assume that you are, because
since the surgery, when we have problems, they are not small ones.
I had to add iron (I take the green triangular Feosol, very easy to
swallow); I had to add Vitamin E and C. I am religious about taking the
B-12 (I found a FABULOUS sublingual at puritanspride.com -- I take the 2500
mcg. and it has no nasty aftertaste and has a nice cherry flavor). I also
take calcium citrate 2xs a day. There's no getting around it (for me,
because I don't like liquid vitamins and I haven't found a chewable I
like)... those suckers are huge, but necessary. My multivitamin right now
is on the bigger side too, but I found a great adult chewable at the same
website... very tasty and no aftertaste.
As for the dehydration, do whatever you can to up your intake. You don't
really want to be in the hospital on IV drips, do ya? It's just starting to
get so nice out now... For exercise, my girlfriend has been torturing me for
months about joining curves. I'm in a special category as far as exercise
is concerned. I'm a fairly new amputee and I have many restrictions due to
that problem. I've just recently gotten enough confidence to try it out. I
went today for the first time, and it was absolutely awesome. Let me tell
you, if I can do it, anybody can! The way you can motivate yourself is the
way I did. I just kept telling myself that I CAN take 1/2 hour out of my
day for me, to benefit me. That's literally all it takes. You go around
their cycle 3 times (30 seconds on each machine) and you're done. Not one
machine was too much for me. They are soooooo supportive in there too.
My advice to you is do not wait for yearly reports on your bloods. They
should be drawn every three months and you should get copies of the labs so
you can follow your trends and "tweak" your vitamins and supplements as
needed.
I wish you the best of luck.
live each day like it's your last... love like you've never been hurt...

Hi everyone!
I just wanted to take a minute and introduce myself. My name is
Trish, and I live in Boiling Springs, SC. I have already found my
surgeon and gotten my approval from my insurance agency. In about an
hour, I have my second meeting with my surgeon and we will go over
everything in detail. I am really excited about the surgery and have
spent many hours researching. My co-morbidities include Diabetes,
High Blood Pressure, and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. I am 29. I am a
little nervous about the meeting today, but supposedly, I will have
my surgery date by Wednesday of next week! After a life time of being
overweight.. it seems like a dream to be able to finally do something
about it!
Well, that's about it! Ask me anything and I will be glad to share!

Vitamins

2008-02-20 20:21:25

Dear all,
For those of you needing vitamins, puritanspride.com is having a vitamin
sale right now (buy one, get two free) and their prices are really
reasonable. Depending on what you buy, if you spend $100 (easy for me to
do!) you get free shipping and you'll have it in your house in two days.
Their 2500 mcg sublingual B-12 is actually delicious! Very cherry tasting
and no nasty aftertaste. They also have chewable calcium citrate and
chewable adult vitamins that are tasty too. Since my last blood test, my
doctor has added iron, vitamin E and C, plus I take potassium, so it's real
easy to spend $100, but when you think about it, I'm getting $300 worth of
product and the one shopping spree lasts me a whole year! No, I don't work
for them, I just think they've got a great product and when they run this
sale, that's the time to take advantage of it.

Surg Date

2008-02-19 17:17:44

Hello all -
well as I ready everyones posts I am wondering.... why does it
take so long for some to get the surgery done and others it happens
quicker? I am asking because I already have my date for surgery set
for the end of july and I just started this process not even a week
ago. My doc thinks Insurance won't be an issue and I have my physch
evail on July 1st. I do live in Montana so that could have something
to do with it since maybe we don't have such busy clincs and
hospitals but it's not like I like in a tiny town either.... just
wondering! I am very excited about having this done, somewhat scared
as anyone would be but also very happy to be commited to this!

I had an appointment with my PCP last week and was thrilled to learn

As of yesterday, the 25th of June, I have lost 96 lbs.
But I do have some medical conditions araising. I went to doctor's
yesterday to get my test results back from my yearly pap and mammo.
My Iron and B's are really low. My cholesterol and BP are still
high. I am starting to get dehydrated. I also have a bad urinary
infection. They are running some tests on my urine. Some bacterial
thing and something else she can't figure out. And to top that off I
am just about to go into menopause. My hormones are all out of
wack. YIKESS!!!!!!!!! I also need to get myself motivated and
exercise and I just can't get myself moving. I know I need to, to
beat these illnesses.
I did get a B12 shot and taking extra B and extra Iron.
Just need some friends to chat with

Nope, can't even tolerate the smell of them. I think it had ALOT to
do with the fact that each time I got sick and went back to the

similar. I'm sure it was just an unfortunate coincidence but now I
just can't stand them. The make me gag just thinking about them!

I apologize, I'm a bit behind on my posts, so I'm sure you've already gotten
lots of responses, but I thought I would put my 2 cents in. I was lucky, I
got my surgery fairly quickly after deciding to go with it. Although I didn't
have the problem you are having pre-op, as my friends were all supportive for
the most part, I feel that tension now. My surgery was 4 months ago, and I am
down 70-75lbs, and for the first time, I am smaller than some of my friends.
Now I'm beginning to feel some tension regarding it, and like I can't really
share how things are going anymore. It was okay when I was still bigger than
them, but now it is kind of awkward. I guess that is why I turn to this
website, because I can talk with others who understand what I am going through
and
can relate to things that only those intersted in the surgery or having had the
surgery can understand. The only thing I could suggest for those friends who
may be a little less than enthusiastic for you (not speaking about your
"friend" who dumped on you just b/c he was jealous...thats not a true friend) is
to
focus on activities and conversations to things not related to your surgery
(hard i Know when you're so excited about it)...and save those conversations
about WLS with those who are going to be supportive, or with your friends here.
Best of luck to you! Keep us posted on how things are going for you...and no
worries, Oct 8th will be here befre you know it!

2008-02-15 08:00:12

I would like to know if any body out there had to go to a psychiatrist
before they had wls? The Bariatris treatment center that I went to
sent me a lettler saying I had to do that before my insurance would
even conister it. I also have to have blood work done which I'm doing
next week. This is going to be a long road a head of me. But, I have
to do this before my health gets bad. I also have to get in order all
the diets I have been on. With a Dr. I have to have there letter head
on the paper. That could be tough. I never really followed up with a
diet with a Dr. I was on diet pills twice but never had to keep going
to the Dr. For that. I guess I will have to go see my regular Dr. I
want to see what he thinks of this wls. I hope to hear from someone
soon. Thank you, Char

Hello

2008-02-14 07:29:44

Hi my name is Kathy. I had gastric bypass surgery in december2002. I
am so glad I made the decision to live. This is my first venture into
a web site where others understand and know what my life was like
and is like. I look forward to learning more about this site and the
people involved.

Hello! Newbie and question

2008-02-14 02:12:08

Hi,
My name is April. I am 39 and I am in the beginning stages of being
approved for gastric bypass surgery. I have been researching the
procedure and I have a consultation July 14th. My bmi is 38.8 . The
nurse told me that the insurance company will approve 35 to 39 bmi with
medical complications (she used another word and that has completely
slipped my mind... so bear with me.. LOL). She felt that I would be a
candidate for surgery. I am so excited! I hope that I don't build
myself up to much to be disappointed but I can't even think like that
right now. :-)
She ask me several questions on the phone and one I can't really
connect with the surgery...
She ask if I had any mental disorders, Bipolar, etc. I do suffer from
depression and take an anti depressant. Does anyone know if this could
hinder my approval?
I look forward to getting to know everyone and read about your progress.
April

Numb bottom????

2008-02-12 01:14:15

I thought I might ask this question of you guys......it may sound
weird but since the surgery the top half of my rear end is
completely numb and sooo painful if I try to sit on anything hard
for a while. I have a lower herniated disk anyways but I have never
gone numb and STAYED numb like this. I figure it was from lying on
my back for so long in the hospital but has anyone else experienced
this and if so....how long did it take to get the feeling back?
Thanks guys!

I had the surgery!

2008-02-11 18:44:03

Hey all!
Well, I had my surgery Friday June 6th, and after several horrible
days where I was so full of gas I could barely move, I was released
monday and back in the hospital the same day because I couldn't stop
throwing up. Had a cat scan ect. and everything checked out ok so I
was released on Wed. Later that night I started throwing up and
couldn't stop all night long!!!! So my surgeon said..."that's
it!!!!" and she re-admitted me that evening and I had to have a
SECOND surgery to see if anything was amiss.....well...they found a
kinked bowl which they think what was making me sick but then they
also inserted a tube into my OLD stomach in case it was my old
stomach refusing to drain into the lower bowel that was causing all
my misery. Well.....I am almost three weeks out and I am feeling SO
MUCH BETTER!!!! I am suppose to be on liquids only but my surgeon
said I could have a scrambled egg and since then it has been all up
hill!!! AS soon as I can get this stupid tube removed (it really
hurts sometimes) I will feel pretty normal. ON the upside however,
since I can't tolerate any protein drinks at all I can inject them
into my tube and I still get all the protein I need for the day.
Maybe my hair won't fall out!
It was rough for a while but it wasn't till I was soooo miserably
sick that I asked what I had done! Now though.....I thank god that
if that was all I had to go through to feel good like this I would
do it all again!
I guess I share my story for those of you almost to your surgery
date. As hard as you think it will be, you end up wishing it were
that easy.......but it is SOOOO worth it. It's like child
birth...LOL After it is over you don't remember the pain....
Luck to all of you!

Congrads Beth!

Congrads on being approved by your insurance company and getting the
date! Damm I was really hoping to have this done in September at the
latest! This means I will probably have to wait until November! Look
at the bright side you and I will be styling for summer next year in
our hott bodies!!! My question is what insurance do you have? How
long after the Phyc eval guy approved you did the receptionist (who I
dont care for at all and think she is a ditz) send in the stuff to the
insurance company. How long after that did you get your date for it?
Bet the hubby is happy for you. I told mine and he said omg he too
was hoping for sooner.

Hi Mechelle: Travel is not a good thing to do right after surgery:

2008-02-11 00:39:42

You will need to give your body time to heal. It wasnt until I was 4 months out
that I thought of doing much of any thing except walk and get around.I would be
concerned about pulling out your inside stiches. Please take time to heal your
stomach before traveling. Please feel free to write me if you would like to talk

perpare for your surgery you will be less stressed out. Start by taking prenatal
vitimines, Buy baby spoons and forks and sipper cups. it will help for you to
get your body for the stress of surgery. To get more protien right after surgery
use non fat dry milk for extra protien in your food such as yogert, protien
shakes, etc.I use Isopure for my protien supplement. French vanilla is my
favorite to mix up in yogert and you can mix it is crystal light too.Keep
writting and praying for strength. God will attend you. Please feel free to

The Good News :o)

2008-02-10 10:41:13

Hello Everyone
I just wanted to let you all know about the wonderful news I received today.
My surgery date has been pushed up and the lovely secretary for my surgeon
with her kind heart asked me first if I wanted the new date and I shouted OH YES
I DO !!! So instead of waiting until 09/23/03 my new date is 08/25/03 that
is a whole month ahead of schedule.
I am so ready for this surgery and moving on with my life. I even did
something so optimistic for myself I ordered a couple of outfits in the size
that I
consider my goal size which is a size 9-10 or 11-12 and I will keep these in

Things are moving right along.

Well group today I had my psyche test at Brookwood Hospital with Dr. Azrin.
He was one of the most polite, comical doctors I have ever had the pleasure of
meeting. Very very at ease with him. This will leave me with the sleep study
and the nutritionist I have to see then I just have to wait on the doctor's
office to give me a surgery date. Im getting excited and scared, lol.

Sorry everyone, I am about 15 digests behind! I just got to reading this one
tonight. First of all, Daniel, welcome to the group! I'm so glad you
decided to post and let us know you were there. I sincerely hope you will
continue
to post, it sounds like you have a lot of wonderful stories and insight to
share. Secondly, CONGRATULATIONS on the weight loss!! 116lbs, that is awesome!
:) And finally, this poem is wonderful...I think you hit the nail on the head
in describing life for a lot of us pre-operatively. I hated being so self
conscious all of the time. Its sad people often don't take the time to get to
know the wonderful people who just happen to be overweight. But I will refrain
from stepping onto my soap box for this post... I just wanted to welcome you,
and thank you for sharing your wonderfully personal poem, it definately struck
a chord with me.

Hi, I have been lurking for about three to four months, I have
learned a lot form all of you. I have never posted before. I do have
a few suggestions: 1. if you
are constantly weighting yourself, put the scales in your spouces
trunk of their car. that way you do not have access to it all the
time. 2. also for your safety order a medical alert
tag/necklace/bracelet for yourself. It might save your life some day!

Carnie Wilson Photos in Playboy

2008-02-08 15:59:48

Yes, their is definately airbrushing involved. I haven't seen the
photos as of yet, but she mentioned this when she was being
interviewed on 20/20. There is a lot of "touch up" work involved in
magazines and whatnot.

Flu symptoms

2008-02-08 14:12:14

Has anyone had a flu since having surgery? I have been feeling just
awful since yesterday-vomiting,diarrea,chills,fever,and an all over
yucky feeling. It is hard to tell if it is a flu or problems related
to surgery. This is my reason for asking everyone. Some symptoms are
the same as surgery related. I feel weak as a kitten and can't hardly
get out of my own way.

Surgery Went Fine

2008-02-07 19:12:42

I had my surgery on Tuesday, June 17. My fears of not making weight were
quickly taken care of. The first part of pre-op was the scale. I had actually
lost weight. It was a great feeling to know that one last hurdle was out of the
way.
The surgery went great...according to my doctor, Dr. L Murphy of Pacific
Bariatric. The surger was about 90 minutes, little bleeding, no complications
and no leaks.
I was in the hospital for 4 days and then discharged to a hotel that is close to
the hospital. (I am an out of town patient and have Kaiser insurance. All of
this was taken care of for me). I paniced a little when I stepped on the scale
in the hospital because I had gained 10 pounds! I thought I was headed the
wrong direction. Then realized it was the IV that was pouring into me.
Well, had my post op appointment on Monday, June 23 and had not only lost the 10
pounds of water, but an additional 6 pounds on top of that.
I am home now and experiencing very little hunger. It is going great!
Cindy
Post-OP.....finally!

Have you tried Crystal Pro

2008-02-07 19:02:30

Hello All
I just tried a great tasting protein supplement from <A
HREF="www.wlssuccess.com"
called crystal pro in the black cherry flavor and it tastes like candy. I
offers
20 grams of pure whey isolate protein per serving. I could mix this into a
drink and shake it up or put it into food. I am trying to discover the protein
supplement that I will be able to stand after my surgery on 9/23/03. I detest
protein drinks but if I could make it taste like a smoothie then I might be
able to ingest it. I know I know I am a big cry baby but I am trying to think
realistically and plan ahead.
Hey I have been following the wls diet closely and I have already lost my 10
pounds needed for my surgery I am currently 277 down from my 287 that I
weighted during my first consultation on 04/30/03. I am not drinking and eating
and
really taking smaller portions and chewing my food as best as I can. I find
that my biggest problem is slowing down. I can usually wolf down my meal in
record time so now I am trying to take my time that is so hard. I am trying to
battle my head hunger now and I do realize the difference. My goal is to be
20 pounds down before surgery date that gives me 2 months to get my act
together. I want to be between 250-260 on my date of surgery. My surgeon is no
joke he said he requires all his patients to lose 10 pounds before surgery or he
will reschedule you until you do. He said it is because it helps shrink the
size of the liver and make the lap procedure much easier.
Oh well that is all for now please try the crystal pro I am popping a few in
my mouth right now and it tastes exactly like cherry candy. This helps handle
my sweet tooth LOL

My Weight & Update

2008-02-07 10:00:34

I havent written in a while. There are a couple of things I wanted to update
on. One of them was my new official weight. 5 weeks and 3 days post op at
my doc appointment I was down to 234.7 which is a 27 lb weight loss!
The second thing is that I had a blockage last Wednesday. Even being a
nurse, I still didnt catch what was going on so I thought I would share what it
felt like. It felt like the worst case of heartburn ever. It was a searing,
burning pain that was right in between my breasts. It felt like a hot knife
stabbing through my chest and into my back. Eventually the pain got so bad that
I
was forced to go to the doctor and the outlet out of my pouch was blocked.
It was the worst pain in recent memory! After about 4 hours, it unblocked on
its own. I was lucky that it went on through. Be careful everyone and chew,
chew, chew!

What Can I do Different That I Cant Do Now?

2008-02-05 20:21:08

Hello everyone,
My best friend is about the same size that I am. (maybe a little
smaller since she is shorter than I am. (Im 5'10 285 lbs) She is
against me having this surgery. I know it is not my job to convince
her that why Im having it - but I would like to have something to
back up my reasoning. Her question is: what will you be able to do
differently with the surgery that you cant do now? (Aside from
forciably changing your eating habits?) She keeps telling me that if
I had spent nearly as much time doing research on what to eat right
as opposed to research on the RNY I would be saving time and money.
Does anyone have ANYONE have any suggestions? I know that she is
looking out for my well being - and I have made up my mind - I just
want to be able to have something to back up what I am saying.
Thanks for listening.

Tracking lab results

Hi,
I am having surgery (proximal open RnY), and have read many times
about tracking our own lab results to compare one set with the next,

Can someone tell me what to track? I have my pre-op lab results, but

vitamins/update

2008-02-04 22:44:38

did anyone ever try vista vitamins? Carnie wilson endorses them and t hey
are made for gastric bypass people... they are largish waffers about a nickle
size and you are supposed to take 5 a day. They taste fine but that is a lot to
chew in a day, I felt. Now I do flintstones, but I am thinking of going to
prenatal vitamins because they are just full of such good vitamins. I need
clearance from my surgeon to swallow pills though. I will see him this wednesday
and I will also be talking about my gallbladder. I will let you know how it
all goes.

Hi I"m new here

2008-02-04 21:38:53

Hi my name is Linda and waiting for my surgery date. Here is a
little info about myself. I am married, my hubby is in the Army and
we are stationed here in Hawaii for the next two years,I"m from
Maryland. I miss the mainland. I have two kids, girl and boy. I
have been over weight ever since I turned 20, now that I'm 30 and
have health problems due to being overweight, I'm 5ft 1inch tall
and weigh 240lbs. I just hope I dont gain anymore weight. I have
high blood pressure and heartburn, back ache, swelling of the legs
and knee problems. I feel like an old lady at times. This is the
highest I have ever weighed. I have tons of questions to ask. I'm
looking to have my surgery done in Feb 2004, that is what they told
me but no date for sure. I just hope it wouldn't take any longer
than 8 months from now, since I have been waiting since Feb 2003. Is
there anyone out there who is in the military related? I'm looking
to meet new friends.
Linda

Hi Everyone,
Sorry I haven't replied sooner. We have been out of town and just got
back tonight. Thank you all so much for such a wonderful welcome. I
am so glad you like my poem. You know, the funny thing about it is
that I wrote that in only a few minutes drawing from my own
experiences. I have written a few others but I feel kind of funny
showing people what I have done. I don't anyone to think I am a hot
shot or somthing because I'm not. I'm just plain ole me. When I get
the nerve I will post a couple of those too.
Well it's time to put my feet up and relax. Take care everyone.

Are the next 3.5 months going to be like this?

2008-02-04 03:09:23

Hey all, I joined the group about a month or so ago when I was on the
tail end of collection research on GBS. I was looking at it as a
option for myself. Hahahha, duh! i guess that is why I am the one
typing this. Anyway, after about 8 months of thinking about it, I
decided to go ahead and do it. I made a consult with a surgeon,
talked to several of his patients, attended some support groups and
read a lot. It took about 2 months just to get an appointment with
him and now we weren't able to make a date for surgery until Oct. 8.
While that once seemed so far off, it's not so much anymore and every
now and then I let some anxiety about it get to me. I did not want to
tell anyone of the decision I made. I didn't even want to tell my
parents what I was going in for but I knew, living alone, that would
be unrealistic to think I can recover by myself. Then, I told a
friend of mine who also has a weight problem. I told him only because
he mentioned researching it as well. I came clean thinking he would
understand. He did not. We no longer talk anymore because he is
already jealous of something that hasn't even happened yet. All of my
other friends have been really supportive but it's digging into me
that they might get jealous too. Or maybe, it's just me and my
issues. I don't know, but this all seemed so easy a month ago and now
it feels like I have to reassure everyone I'm not going to change on
a daily basis. I'm seriously thinking of becoming a recluse.

Dear Daniel,
Welcome to a very fun and informative group. Your poem was great. It
reminded me, sad to say, of me. It was truly eloquent. You should keep
writing and put together a collection. You will see, with the passage of

will leave) will change for the better. Nice to "meet" you.

Good News and Bad News

2008-02-02 01:38:21

I can understand your frustration. When I first started looking into getting
WLS, about 3 years ago, they did not perform it in Abilene, where I live. So
I began researching WLS surgeons on the Internet in other areas figuring I
would have to travel. The one I was actually able to even get through to was in
San Antonio (remember this was in like 2000 or 2001). They told me they're
waiting list was about 2 or 3 years, just for the initial consult meeting.
Anyways, I thought it was pretty funny, I just received a phone call from them
reminding me of my "orientation" time this past week. Now THAT is a waiting
list!!! however, I found out at the end of November 2002 that there were
surgeons in Abilene that did the surgery now. I know there are some who will
not go
to anyone who does not specialize only in this surgery or been doing it
forever; however, I am desperate. Dr. Einspanier also performs other
surgeries...and actually performed my mothers double mastectomy in 2000 when she
was
diagnosed with breast cancer. I had a very good rapport with him, and I felt
very
confident in his abilities, especially after my visit with him one on one and
the seminar. Anyways, I started my journey with him at that orientation in
November and my surgery was in February. The only reason it took that long, was
because my insurance changed Jan 1st, from HMO to POS, and the HMO plan didn't
cover it. I had to wait until my insurance changed over, and then submit the
pre-d. i got a response to that relatively quickly and all my required
pre-op done and they scheduled my surgery within 3 weeks of the insurance
approval
date. He also utilizes a co-surgeon on all WLS, they do all surgeries
together. Their office staff is wonderful too, actually enjoyed going to the
doctor
(and being weighed)--that's a first!
Anyways, I can understand how frustrating the wait can be..I just couldn't
stand the thought of waiting any more to start my life. So for that reason, I
was willing to sacrifice a bit. Not in the care I received, but for instance,
at this time, they only perform open, lap is not a choice, because they have
only been doing this since may 2002 and have elected not to start offering the
lap until later...but i didn't want to wait either...best of luck to you and a
speedy outcome!!
