I'm a bit behind on my posts, but I just read yours regarding your concerns
about gaining weight back after the surgery. I can really relate to this,
especially recently. I am at the 4 month mark (as of the 19th) and I am finding
that I can eat larger portions than I used to, and I'm starting to feel hungry,
and experiencing head hunger, for the first time since my surgery. I KNOW
I'm not supposed to snack, and I need to fight the head hunger and I should
start measuring my food portions.... all of this i KNOW...just like I did before
the surgery... but knowing and doing are two different things. I didn't have
the will power before my surgery, what makes me think I will now? I take some
comfort in the realization that when I feel like I let myself down, or ate too
much, that in comparison to my pre-surgery times, it was nothing. Like I
feel bad now for being able to eat 3/4 of a can of soup...whereas prior to
surgery I would have eaten about 5 cans! So I try to take comfort in the
knowledge
that even if my tummy grows or expands, i will never be able to eat like
before and shouldn't be able to ever gain that much back. But I also look at
those
who are ahead of me on this journey, like Lori H and Di and I know this is
doable :)
Sorry if this isn't very helpful, I just wanted to let you know you weren't
alone with these thoughts. if you ever want to chat, please feel free to email
me. maybe we can encourage one another :)

Hi All
Someone had asked the explanation of the Naso-Gastric Tube (NG Tube) , and
here it is:
NASO GASTRIC TUBE (NGT)
Is a tube that is passed through your nose into your stomach when you are
asleep in the OR. It is hooked to wall suction post-op for drainage,
decompression, and protects the internal staple line from the effects of a leak
if one
should occur. The nurse will remove it after receiving the results of your Upper
GI Series (UGI). There isn't any pain associated with its removal.
Hope this helps

Hello Everyone:
I was watching TV this morning and I saw a commercial for a product called
the Ultimate Chopper. It is a very small looking food processor and it has 750
watts of power and the demonstration guy used it to chop everything. I saw him
chop meats and vegetables into a really fine consistency baby food fine in
seconds. What I want to know is have any of you ever bought this machine?
If you have does it work as well as it seems especially on chopping meats and
cheeses and vegetables baby food fine if you want it. The machine also has
an attachment for a blender where I could blend up my protein shakes into
smoothie consistency. The guy even showed how you can make low fat ice-cream
and
slushies with the machine. Please I have an itchy trigger finger and I really
want to buy it I will be needing it in September because my lap rny surgery
date is Sept. 23 and it seems like a dream come true.
Please you guys try everything please someone help me LOL.
Thanks Guys and Gals,

Hi everyone. Hope you are all having a good weekend. I was
wondering if anyone here has Medical Assistance with the state of
Minnesota? Just straight MA. What I mean by this is that you have
MA but not with medica or health partners etc. If you do I am
wondering about your experence with them. Do you know if they
contract out pre auths through Blue Cross Blue Shield? How long did
it take to get approved? How did you contact them to find out if
they recived your information? Do you have phone numbers to contact
them? Any and all advise is welcome and thank you very much. Take

Okay.. I need some tips and also just support on water intake.. this is still
a hard thing for me as I am trying to be good and not drink around a meal and
then sometimes there are not enough hours in th e day, it seems, to get in
all the water I need. Have any of you tried certain tricks to get your water
in? I was wondering if I said "you can't eat until you finished 2 large glasses
of water" or some kind of rules. I also know that this is super important
in the summer months when we are sweating more and more. Any advice from
others?
How long do you wait to start to eat after you have drank? Iknow that
different plans say different time frames... usualy anywhere from 15-45 min.

Hi Wendy: You need to start down the road to preporation for the surgery this
will help your nerviousness. Start taking a prenatal vitimine, Buy Baby spoons
and forks and sipper cups and start using them. Your body needs to get into
shape and get used to using these utencils. We all need to prepare for this life
saveing surgery. If you will do these things now your body will be prepared to
how you will have to eat after the surgery.I did these things about 5 months
before my surgery and boy did it help me.have nonfatdry milk on hand for added
protien and you may need to eat fat free from the very beginning.Buy containers
that are 1oz. 2 oz., and 1/2 cup to measure your portions from the very
beginning. I am 11 months down the road now and am doing great and am very happy
with my new life. I have lost 92 lbs and 11 cloathing sizes so far.

Hi Everyone,
My name is Dan. I am from Michigan. I had open rny November 26, 02,
at the Bariatric Treatment Center in Ypsilanit, Michigan. So far I
have lost 116lbs, and I feel better than I have felt in more than 20
years! All my weight related problems are disappearing. the latest is
as of two weeks ago I am no longer on blood pressure medicine. Before
surgery my BP was 165 over 110, and now it is consistantly 120 over
65.
Someone told me about the Gastric Bypass website and as usual I
thought I'd check it out. I really like coming here. there is so much
information. I normally just read the posts but tonight I thought I
would post a message to let you know I am coming to the site
everyday. Thank you all for posting such informative info. I enjoy
reading all of them. I look forward to reading more of them. Maybe I
will post a few myself.
From time to time I like to write things down. I wrote this a few
days ago and shared it with the people in my support group. they all
thought I should share it with more people, so, at the risk of
appearing a little forward I thought I would share it with you all. I
hope you like it. Take care everyone.

Sit and Smile
People passing staring with judgmental eye,
Or worse, pretending not to see me
It hurts but I sit and smile
A bride and groom, everyone's happy
Children laughing and playing
People dancing and having fun
But I just sit and smile
The stores are crowded
People shopping, trying on all the new fashions
They look so beautiful in their new clothes
I sit and smile
Another family reunion
Again, I hear "helpful" family comments
Wow, look at you!
If you get any bigger you're gonna pop
You know all that weight isn't healthy
You ever thought about going on a diet
Again I sit and smile
The last day for the kid's soccer season
It's parents vs. the kids
I am too heavy to play
My feelings are hurt and I am deeply sad
But I still sit and smile
A day at the beach
Please don't make me go
People stare, I feel awful
Too embarrassed to move from my spot
So I sit and smile
We are at a restaurant
I can't even fit in the chair
I hear them laughing at me
The waitress suggests a diet plate
I just sit and smile
Meeting new people is such a drag
All they see is my fat body
They don't see ME
I don't want to sit and smile anymore
I want to cry but I really want to live!

Hi Everyone,
My name is Jean. I am 33 years old and live in Arizona. I will be
having the lap RNY on 8/6/03 and am beginning to get a little nervous!
I've been reading the posts here for a few months now and I think
this is such a supportive site! It definately helps my anxiety when I
read how well you all have done and I can really relate to all the
feelings you other pre-ops have too! Take care,

I have been using the Flintstone Chewables 2x/day but I think they
taste horrible. SO then I tried the Centrum chewable - it sucks, too.
So, I ordered from Bariatric Advantage. You are supposed to take
their capsules 5x/day. I can't remember to do take this many :-) LOL
Someone had recommended the Bariatric Advantage mint chewable
calcium - I would be glad to sell or GIVE these away - they are
HORRIBLE, too. (So, am I just too particular?)
I don't mind the BA iron or the sub-lingual B-12.
So, would appreciate anyone with some better (and cheaper) vitamins
to give me some advice.
TO THE PRE-OPS: If you wish to talk to someone feel free to send me
an email and I'll be more than happy to visit with you and will give
you my phone number, if you wish.

I have a testimonial for Excel service which will make me a customer for
life even if I was not a rep. Yesterday I was having my TV satellite changed to
DISH. Their installation person wanted to put the satellite on a pole in my
yard versus on the house for better reception. A few minutes later I was on the
phone and it went dead. I quickly checked all lines and found no dial tones.
Of course it also meant no computer. I yelled at the guy outside to tell him to
stop he had just cut my phone lines. I grabbed my cell phone and my first call
was to excel. They told me they would have my service back on within 24 hrs. I
thought that was great. My next call was to Bell South since I had to keep one
line with them because of my dsl. They told me they may not have my service
back on until 7:00 on Thursday. This was at 2:00 on Tuesday. Needless to say I
was not happy. This morning at 9:00 my doorbell rang and there stood a guy in a
Bell South shirt. He was only aware of my excel phone number and not the other
number. He of course fixed both while he was here but Excel is the one that got
him here. We need to make sure all of our customers know the difference in the
type of service Excel offers. I now have my own testimonial however anyone can
use this example.
A Happy Excel customer and Rep,

Hey Everyone!
I won't be able to keep up much with all the posts the next few days
as I get everything ready for my trip to the Yukon and Alaska, which
we leave on Wed. I can't believe it is here. First it seemed so far
away and now time is flying. I have stuff around the house to take
care of (grass, weeds, plant flowers where the weeds are, clean out
the fridge etc.), plus pack and buy any last minute things etc. Plus
I have to work Monday and Tuesday - YIKES!!
So have fun and I hope lots more people get approval while I am
gone. This trip will be so much easier minus at least 112 lbs! When
I booked it last October I didn't even have WLS in my mind, but by
mid November it was in my mind and by Feb 3rd I had surgery. It was
a whirlwind but am I glad I got it. Everything will just fit so much
better (especially seats at the various places we will be going) and
I will have so much more stamina.
I'll catch up with you when I return. Wish me luck in getting
everything done!

Well, I am only 4 months post op (as of the 19th) and haven't been on a
roller coaster (yet) since surgery, but I have had that falling sensation like
when
i'm going to sleep...i know thats not exactly the same, but it was the same
sensation i had prior to surgery. you really can't "feel" a difference between
the pouch and tummy... but you will notice when you get full it is like it
backs up your esophogus, rather than a fullness in the stomach...other than
that, I don't "feel" any differences.... hope this helps!

Hi everyone. I had my surgery (open RNY) on june 12th at Johns
hopkins in Baltimore. Had a few problems, scar tissue from an old
surgery and gall stones but my doctor took care of all that. I was
released Monday the 16th, feeling better everyday. My staples are
itchy but other than that I'm doing well. I don't get my staples out
till july 2nd , because I'm diabetic and it takes me longer to heal.
I haven't weighed myself but I feel much lighter :) and my clothes
are looser.
I just wanted to thank all of you for your help in answering my
questions. It made it alot easier knowing exactly what to expect. If
there's any help I can give to anyone please don't hesitate to ask.

Hello Jade,
Congratulations on taking these first steps to your new life! Since every
persons body is so unique and special, its hard to say what problems you may
encounter post op....and I do say "may". As you read through these emails you
will see that some have had little to no problems, others a few problems, and
still others who have had bigger challenges. The one statement that comes back
time after time, is "I am glad I did it". I am a nurse and took care of many
post op bypass patients and the ones who came back in with complications. They
ALL said they would do it again in a heartbeat, and so would I.
Good Luck and keep us posted!

Hi Everyone:
Denise here, Well I have begun the beginning of all the testing that needs to
be done in order to get my sleep study done and to see what kind of health I
am in. My Dr. called me today and told me that my blood test's came back and
he said that my Thyroid blood tests came back and it seems as if there is
definitely a thyroid problem? Does anyone know if this is a condition that will
make me eligible for the surgery. I am 46 years old, I am 5'4 inches and my
weight is 274 pounds. He also told me that all the extrema pain I feel all the
time could be Fibromyalgia. He has to rule out other conditions before he can
diagnosis Fibro. Geez must be one of those things that if all else fails
Fibromyalgia is the culprit. So everyone, that is what is going on so far. Has
anyone had any of these conditions? He did say that he has to do further
studies and run further tests because he said he is having some other idea's of
what may be causing the pain. I care about the weight. All I want to do is
Feel
better and not be in continuous pain. I got my darvocet filled so that will
help with some of the pain.... Bye. And God Bless.

hello all,
and for the question, "does gastric bypass really work" well for me yes
it does going from over 760 LB and IM now down to under 300, this surgery has
saved my life and any one that does have this surgery it will work if you work
with it, its a tool, its not something that will work over night, if you work
with this surgery and tool it will work for you and the weight will drop, just
take it one step at a time and one day at a time. and you will make it.
its a hard road to start with but, you will see the success with this
surgery, it has changed my life for the better, IM enjoying life each day now
and
IM counting my blessing each day IM alive.

Dear Caro,
All I can say is ditto what Chris said... sometimes I feel like we've got
one mind. It's too funny. As for me, I've done very little yo yo'ing. I
lost a little, gained back a little bit more. My all time high was 515 and
through OA in 1984 I lost down to my all time adult low of 236. During that
entire loss, I taught myself nothing and did not retrain myself in any way.
It was inevitable that I go back up. The progression of the weight gain was
much slower, but in 2001 I was back up to 420, heading for that 515 with a
bullet.
I don't feel like I can ever say "gone forever" either. Not because I don't
have faith in myself to succeed (because, due to the surgery, I do) but
because nothing in life is guaranteed. I assure myself, though, that this
time is different because I'm relearning the better/healthier way to eat
now. I know that my pouch may stretch, but in the meantime, I've trained
myself over the last 9 months, to eat by the clock (because I'm still not
feeling hunger) and to always be drinking (which I think is a huge part of
the reason that I never feel that hunger). I've begun reading all the
labels of everything I buy. I spent 3 hours in the supermarket this morning
(and, thanks Chris, I found that turkey! It looks great and I can't wait to
try it).
I am firmly convinced that even if I CAN eat more, I don't have to. I'm
gonna do whatever it takes to make this work. I feel more committed to this
new way of life and this new way of eating than I ever have to any other
"diet" in my life. I feel like my life and my health is on the line this
time and I'm unwilling to jeopardize that in any way. The rules we have to
follow, for me, are such a simple guideline. If that's what it's going to
take, that's what I'm willing to do. I'm not perfect at it, but I'm doing
my best and I'm satisfied with that.

The Good News: I went to the orientation for GB surgery. My doctor and
nutritionist feel I am the perfect candidate. I called the insurance
company and they said they would cover it if deemed medically necessary
(43 BMI; diabetic; high cholesterol).
The Bad News: I'm on a waiting list (about two months) to see the
doctor to start my pre-tests. They said once that's done it would be
about 11 months before the surgery is done.
The Good News: I can have the surgery....right around my 40th birthday!
The Bad New: I don't want to wait!!!!!!
The Good News: I will have a year to get myself ready for the surgery
and lifestyle change.

Hello everyone! I was soooooo happy to find this website - what a
wealth of information it has been. I am going to see a doctor about
getting the procedure done - my appointment is on July 2nd. I have
already scheduled a mental evaluation, and also have a LON from
another doctor. My BMI is 46 and my whole body hurts
most all of the time :( I am married (8 years) and we have a 1 year
old son (Sterling) who means THE WORLD TO ME. I suppose im also
doing this for him so his Mommy can be there for him and enjoy life.
I am 5'4 and 273 pounds - im so ashamed to say that. Do any of you
have any advise good or bad for me? I am not scared of the procedure
itself just the fact that sometimes complications happen and im
wondering if any of you have experienced anything that is bothersome
to you.....They say there is a risk of dying but at the rate im going
in another few years I could devlope some very serious health issues -
any advise or input would be a HUGE HELP - Thanks so much...
Hello Everyone
I found this website a long time ago but it may be of interest to many of the
people like me pre-op's :) It is the Open Roux en Y surgical operation in a
video and it is graphic but if you are considering this operation you should
know what will be taking place in your body. I hope this is educational and is
of assistance to all who are endeavoring to make this life altering (for the
better as far as I am concerned) decision. I will be having this procedure on
9/23/03 and I for one am excited and I can hardly wait. My bypass is going
to be 100 cm of my small intestine so watch the video and learn. If any one
has a link to a lap RNY procedure video please send it to me :)

Dear Chris,
You've got me drooling now. I'm gonna look for it on Saturday.
Dear Char,
This surgery is like nothing else you've ever experienced. It's not like
the old diets where you give up and just gain it all back plus. At least
it's not for me. My entire way of thinking about food has changed. I don't
crave the old stuff. I'm on a mission to get healthy and thin... my reward:
no more diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, neuropathy, etc.,
etc. I'm no longer in a man's 6X big tee shirt from the He Man shops. I'm
wearing a woman's 1X and it's only been 9 months. The rewards are so great
and, again, as far as I'm concerned, the sacrifice is so little. Go for it.
You'll be glad (ecstatic) you did! Good luck to you...

Hello Everyone
I was riding on the bus on my way home from work and the bus hit a bump and
sent us all flying and it reminded me of a rollercoaster ride drop and a
question came to my mind. How does the pouch feel when you are on a
rollercoaster?
We all know what it is like with a regular stomach you get that bottom
dropping out of the pit of your stomach sensation but with an rny there is only
a
tiny little pouch. How does it feel and are you more prone to throwing up on a
rollercoaster if you eat or drink anything?
Yes, people this is how I occupy my mind until September 23, 2003 when I get
my own tiny little tummy LOL. How does it feel for lap band people? Please
inquiring minds want to know:)

Hello, I'm back. I was not getting my e-mails for a while. I was very
overwelmed by the whole WLS. I went to my first appointment. Now I
need blood work done and a psychiatric consiltation. I made my blood
work appointment and have the ball rolling again. I'm on the right
track again. I need a little suport. My husband is all for this. But
I'm a little scard that I will fail again. Just like all the other
diets I have been on. I really want my health to be better. I need to
get this weight off for good. I want a normal active lifestyle. I
hope
I get some advice back. Thank you Char
Hello. I am new to this group and found out that I am going to have
surgery on the 30th of July. I've done a lot of research, but and
still unsure of what the first few days after surgery are going to be
like. Can anyone help?
Dear Chris,
Well brag all you want to, honey! I love to give credit where it's due.
(My swiss cheesed brain remembered Carol Ann's great shopping day, so I
thought it was her.) Where in the supermarket did you find this (I ask
specifically where, because it took me over 3 months to find Hormel Turkey
Pepperoni because, stupid me, I kept looking for it to turn up with the rest
of the pepperoni, but they actually kept that particular product in the
dairy section... go figure!). I'd like to try the turkey too. I love BBQ.
Thanks for the notice it was you so I could get this information from the
right source...

sorry about the letdown. are the cleveland clinic docs NHP providers?
a friend of mine had dr szomstein, she raves about him. i met dr r @

him. be very proactive & make sure you're on top of every detail.

Dear Shannon,
Pre-surgery, I had terrible numbness/pins and needles in hands and feet. I
was diagnosed with severe neuropathy due to my diabetes being out of control
for so long. I was on 2800 mg of neurontin daily. Post-surgery, I'm off
the neurontin and the tingling is so minimal it's hardly noticeable at all
(I wear magnetic bracelets to help with this. I thought the stories I heard
about magnets were bogus, but they're working for me, so I can't complain.)
I wish you loads of luck and hope it gets better for you too.

Dear Rosemary,
I suggest you lie to weight watchers (just a white lie... hahahaha). Tell
them that your accountant needs copies of your membership records, dates of
attendance, etc., now that weight reduction programs are tax deductible.
It's none of their business why you really want the records, but you have
the right to them.
Good luck and have patience... it's worth the wait.

you're right!! the "reports" section gives all the info, duh. i'll
definitely check out "the calories burned vs. eaten" link.
dayyyumm, excellent job on the water. way to go!
i was told that after 6 months post-op that i no longer needed prot
supplements, but i've decided to re-started 'em. got some EAS ready
made shakes @ WalMart.
i'm reading the "Tufts University Guide to Total Nutrition" & there's
a section on how many calories people need based on basal metabolic
rate & daily activities.
1. BMR = current weight x 10
2. multiply result x 0.30 (for daily activities)
3. add BMR number & activity number together
this is the number of calories that keep you @ the present weight.
anything less equals weight loss.

I have never seen this particular brand of shredded turkey but here
in eastern NC there is a tradition of chopped bbq that is usually
made of pork but is also prepared with turkey or chicken. You can
make it yourself by simply roasting a chicken, turkey, or turkey
breast. Debone it and chop it up finely (unlike Alabama bbq, for
this kind the more chopped the better!), then heat it in the sauce of
your choice. For this area, that would be a vinegar base with red
pepper and spices, but I like it with the tomato base sauce with
garlic and hickory smoke flavor. And Wolfie,I may be in NC but I was
born and raised in Bama!

Girl.. I have a scale..and I can fluctuate 7lbs or more during the day.. i
don't get stressed by the scale..but i can't seem to get rid of it for

Sounds pretty much like Chicken parmesean (sp?) to me which has
become one of the few ways I can eat a solid/thick piece of chicken
breast. I usually get it at Fazoli's and order without pasta and
breadsticks. Their's is lightly breaded but it's baked not fried.
It has the cheese on it and sauce. I actually ask for extra sauce as
it will be a few meals and I want to make sure I have enough sauce
for all meals.
I can only get down dense/thick things with some sort of sauce.
Usually it's fat free but in this case the only carbs I am getting is
from the sauce and the little bit of breading that I don't sweat it.
Also because it is really dense, less fills me up and stays with me
really well. So I say go for it!!

I hope you didn't take any of the questions regarding the contributions
offensively. I am sure no one doubts all the great efforts you have made and
the
great tools you have provided for those interested in WLS. They, like me, were
probably just unaware of exactly how much effort and time you have put into
this.
Anyways, I haven't actually introduced myself, or talked to you before...but
I would just like to give you a big THANK YOU for such a great wealth of
information! I'm sorry to hear you have had such a rough time, but it sounds
like
you are really getting things together and that is wonderful! Also, congrats

I am relatively new to this site, I found it post-operatively one night when
I was having an especially difficult bout with depression. It has been a
great source of encouragement and I am grateful for everything I have learned..I
just wish I had found it pre-operatively as well.

Hi everyone! I just received a call from my surgeon's office and was told
that they are not on my insurance plan and that I would have to pay $3,000
out of pocket to them! I thought I got the whole process underway and now a
setback (one of many I'm sure). I found Drs. Rosenthal and Szomstein in
Weston, Florida, who are on my plan and now have to attend another lecture
Tuesday morning. Was advised that after I attended the lecture, I could
make an appt. with the surgeon if I so chose to. Here we go again! I've
wasted 2 weeks for nothing! I know I'm impatient because now that I've made
up my mind, I just want everything to go quickly. Oh, by the way, I was
also told that with my insurance, Neighborhood Health Partnership, I would
need a letter documenting my weight loss attempt at a facility such as Jenny
Craig, Weight Watchers, Nutritionist, etc. Has anyone done this? I have
been a member of WW more times than I care to admit! It seems as though
this may be difficult to get from them! Any advice?????

13 "non-complacent" months out
Hello Everyone
I am so more than ecstatic I went to my appointment today and spoke with my
surgeon Dr Alan White and I informed him on the fact that I changed my mind
from our initial consultation back in April. I now want the Route en Y
operation. He said that is fine and he will be performing the operation
Laparoscopically and he checked my belly and said it will be just fine. My date
is September
23, 2003. I tried the puppy dog eyes but he really is booked up until then
but I asked his secretary to put me on standby in case anyone drops out.
He allowed me to ask him the following questions and I love his candor he is
such a wonderful person with a strong handshake I might add, hate men with a
weak or limp handshake makes me nervous about them but I digress LOL.
I asked him is he going to be performing a distal or proximal operation on
me?
He stated that since my BMI is over 50 I am classified as super morbidly
obese and that he will be bypassing 100 cm of my intestine with the rny
procedure.
He even drew me a diagram (a pretty good artist too) of how my stomach and
system looks now and then he drew what it will look like after surgery. He
stated the surgery will be about 3 hours and I will be in the hospital for 3
days.
I asked him if I will have a catheter inserted and a nasal gastric tube and
drainage tubes?
He stated that before the surgery I will meet with the anesthesia person and
will be given a shot that will put me to sleep and while I am out they insert
the catheter and that will stay in for 2 days and then be removed. While I am
asleep also the IV and the nasal gastric tube will be inserted but before I
wake up from surgery they will remove the nasal gastric tube. He said that
most likely I will not be going home with a drainage tube but to keep it mind
that it is all according to how everything is going and if he feels I need it I
will have one.
I asked him so how big are the holes that will be made in me for the lap
operation?
He said that the 4 holes for the instruments are about the diameter of a
pencil eraser and the hole for the camera insertion is about the diameter of his
index finger which is approximately the diameter of my thumb so it is pretty
small indeed.
I have some more testing to do but that is all done on the same day an EKG
and more blood work prior to surgery. I have lost 7 pounds already and he said
that 2 weeks prior to surgery I will be on a liquid diet and I should start
eating mostly protein and no carbs (as little as possible) right now. I was 287
on 04/30/03 and today I am 280 so I have 3 more to go to make my 10 pound loss
for surgery but I expect I will lose a whole lot more I have months to go so
my goal will be about 20 in total before surgery. He said it helps to reduce
the size of the liver and makes it easier for him to perform the operation.
I am so excited and it's official this pre-op will be a post op on 09/23/03

Hello Everyone!
I am 1 month post-op! I had my Lap RNY on May 20, 2003. As I'm
introducing foods into my diet I am noticing that as I eat (it could
be anything from salad to chicken) my stomach makes these gurgling
noises that come out of my mouth.. I sound like some kind of alien!
(he he he). Sometimes the gurgling is accompanied by tiny air
bubbles. I try to remember to take my prilosec 1/2 hour before I
eat. From what I notice, it doesn't change anything. I was told
this will go away... has anyone else experienced this? Is it because
my new tummy is closer to my esophogus??? Does it go away??
Thanks All!

this shredded turkey. Besides sandwich type turkey we have ground turkey but I
have never heard of shredded turkey. Is it raw or smoked or what? What is the

Hello All,
I'm approved yeah....It really has happened. It took Aetna 7 days!!!
I can't tell you how I feel. I have 20 days before my surgery on
July 8th.
I want to thank all of you who have written to me and answered my
post and those of you who have given such great information for me
and all others to learn from. I want to be one to help you guys
as I take my journey.
I want to tell you that my journey began a couple years ago.
Researching and trying to decide if that last diet would work but as
we all have found out by now there is no permanent weight loss
programs for us except GBS.
Anyone of you who are trying to decide let me asure you do it now...
I am 51 years old and have lost a lot of time in my life hiding
inside myself behind my fat!!! I have been now diagnosed with
Sleep Apena, Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Joint Pain, shortness of
breath, varicose veins, back and knee pain, kidney and urinary
problems, depression plus more. I have lost seems like a thousand
pounds only to gain it all back and more. I have lost so many years
and if you do not have these medical conditions now believe me you
will as your weight esculates.
Take charge now and get help... Don't waste your life and the lives
of your husband and children and love ones. I can't tell you how I
already feel about myself just knowing the positve changes that I
have chosen for myself and my family. I wish that I could have been
able to go back and re-live my life and not have had to have my
children and husband have to introduce me as their wife and mother.
I know my kids and husband love me just the way I am but oh if I
could have changed that I sure would have. Don't waste your lives
get help now!!!!
I am scared but if I don't have the surgery I am going to die a very
unhappy women and would have lost so much of my life to obesity.
I choose now to do something for me that will benefit my entire
family and friends.
I realize that this is not going to be easy but having lived with
food as my life. I can't wait to give it up to a happier and
healthier person. I am willing to deal with a life change of eating
small portions and head hungry and vomitting, constipation and
diarrhea till I can learn my bodies needs. I am willing to have
surgery that is painful and invasive.
To me it is an adventure to save my life and be able to get in the
floor and play with my grandchildren and to have someone in this
world say hey look at her she is not fat !!!! Most of all I want my
husband to be able to look at me as a sexy lady. I want to feel
like going to the mall and shop in a store for my daughters and not
have people look at you and say we don't carry plus size clothes
when I was looking for someone else. I can't wait to be able to put
a bite of food in my mouth without feeling that everyone is looking
saying, this is why she is fat.
I am finally doing something positive that I have chosen for me...
We all deserve to do something for us for once in our lives.
Hard it will be but the benefits will so outweigh the negatives.
God has given me a blessing and I want to share this blessing with
all of you by doing my best to help you on your journey to a new
YOU..
THANKS GOD, THANKS MY FAMILY AND LOVE ONES, THANKS GBS FAMILY, THANKS
DR.REHNKE'S STAFF FOR MAKING ME A HAPPY AND FOR GIVING ME A NEW
LEASE ON LIFE.
YOUR HAPPY GBS BUDDY,
BRENDA :)
I was sooooo happy the other day when I finally reached a 50 pound
losss and now I am bummed out to the hilt! I got on those darn old
scales this morning and I actually gained 2 lbs back. Is this normal
to bounce around like this? I mean up and down a bit? I didn't do
anything differently yesterday than I have been doing to cause a
gain.My husband says he is going to throw out the scales because I am
driving myself nuts with them. I am almost inclined to agree with
him. Advice please!
Dear Caroline,
Wish I could take credit for recommending the turkey, but I think it was
Carol Ann on her amazing shopping day. I've never had/seen shredded turkey,
but am happy to know it's good!
Dear Di and Lori,
I just wanted clarification on what the donations were for because I knew
I just re-weighed and measured yesterday and to date I have lost 91
lbs and 73 (YES 73!) inches. The inches are the equivalent of a 6'
person (that's how my hubby puts it into perspective for me, lol).
Funny thing is that during the month plateau that I was stuck in, I
apparently continued to lose inches. Not sure that this makes a
whole lot of sense to me, but the inches lost faaaar out"measure" the
6 lbs I lost.
Believe me, I feel every ounce of that 91 lb/73 in loss. My physical
and mental beings are better than ever. Even the events of the past
couple of weeks have been easier to deal with. A year ago depression
would have set in and maintained residence for a looooong time. My
whole outlook has improved and I know it is only going to continue to
get better from here.
Toi
That doesn't sound normal to me. You might want to check with your surgeon
to see if there is a blockage or leak or something. I had/have difficulty with
ice cold water, or if I take too big of a bite of food or eat too much/too
quick....but nothing like what you described. And I really didn't have any
troubles early out, except as I was re-learning to eat. Please keep us posted
and
let us know what you find out. I hope it gets better soon!

I went and saw the WLS dr. today. I am so happy I am getting this done.
I need three things before they will seek approval. Medical Necessity
Letter, Psych Evaluation, and sleep study test. I already have the Psych
Evaluation on Thursday, I have the my PCP working on the Letter, and I am
waiting for them to call me about the sleep study test. I am excited it
is going easier than I thought. He said I have to lose 5 pounds before
the surgery. Anyways what should I expect at the Psych Eval and sleep
study test. Thanks in advance Michele

pre-op lap rny
chocolate-filled mini vanilla cupcakes
Servings | 48
Preparation Time | 15 min
Cooking Time | 18 min
Level of Difficulty | Moderate
desserts | These mini cupcakes are the perfect portion-controlled sweet
treat.
Ingredients
18 1/4 oz unprepared white cake mix
1 cup water
1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce
3 large egg(s)
1 cup pudding, chocolate, prepared with skim milk
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup fat-free cream cheese
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F. Line 48 mini muffin cups with paper liners.
To make cupcakes, beat together cake mix, water, applesauce and eggs at low
speed for 30 seconds; beat on medium speed for 2 minutes more. Spoon batter
into lined cupcake cups.
Bake cupcakes for 5 minutes. Drop a teaspoon of pudding into the center of
each cupcake. Bake for 13 minutes more and cool for at least 30 minutes.
To make icing, create a double boiler: Boil water in a small saucepan and
then reduce heat to simmer. Put chocolate chips in a small metal bowl and set
bowl over simmering water; stir until chocolate melts. Remove from heat and stir
in cream cheese; blend until smooth.
Top each cooled cupcake with 1 teaspoon of icing. Yields 1 cupcake per
serving.
I figure we can change the pudding to sugar free pudding and are there any
sugar free icings on the market?
First of all thanks to everyone who responded to my last email about my
difficulty eating.
I had my upper GI and small bowel study today. The good news is that I do
not have a blockage. The radiologist told me that my pouch was "very small" and
empties immediately. After reviewing those results my surgeon called me at
home and we went over my symptoms again. He asked a lot of questions and says
that he is certain that my problem is esophageal spasms - that is what is
causing my pain. He called me in some medication (Levsin) to take four times a
day, plus some pain medicine (Lortab) and he also wants me to take 2 chewable
pepcids 3 times a day. I am already having an easier time so hopefully I am on
the road to recovery.
Thanks everyone!

FORMULA FOR SUCCESS
The following information comes from my surgeons handbook. I am putting it up on
my web page in order to help others better understand this surgery and the
possibilities in store for them as long as they follow the formula for success.
To be considered a candadate for surgery, clinically severe obese persons must
make a sincere, lifelong commitment and resolution to use the gastric bypass as
a TOOL, not a cure, in controlling obesity. One must always be aware that the
underlying disease process remains and the debilitating tendencies will always
be there. Even cells of the body continue to need too much sustenance. The
effort required to resolve the problem of clinically severe obesity does not
disappear.
Here are 6 very important principles to follow for success:
1) The number one goal is to improve your health.
2) Eat at regular mealtimes, no snacking.
3) Drink adequate water daily.
4) Avoid water 1/2 hour before meals, during, and 1 hour after meals.
5) Take vitamin and mineral suppliments as directed.
6) Avoid substances such as alcohol, aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and
tobacco which can damage the sensitive inner lining of the intestinal tract and
can cause ulcers.
LIFESTYLE CHANGES:
Here are just a few improvements in lifestyle that patients have reported.
* Being active and comfortable in one's body.
* Regaining control of your life.
* Walk down the street or up the stairs without sweating from exertion.
* Getting down on the floor to play with the childrenand have the ENERGY to do
so.
*Shop where friends do.
* Know that weight will never stand in the way of a job opportunity or
promotion.
NUTRITION:
The gastric bypass surgery provides a lifelong tool for dealing with clinically
severe obesity. Food choices andlifestyle behaviors will require special
attention tomake the most out of the surgery. After surgery, the new "stomach"
will be much smaller, about the size of a small egg. The new pouch will act as a
resevoir much the same way the stomach did before the surgery. Because of it's
reduced size, the amount of food eaten at any one time will be limited. Since
the new stomach is small, the body will not receive all the vitamins and
minerals it needs from the foods eaten. Therefore, lifetime vitamin and mineral
supplimentation is REQUIRED to prevent nutritional deficiencies.
* Multiple vitamin/mineral suppliments: 1 chewable tablet twice a day for the
1st 8 weeks (regular vitamin after 8 weeks).
* Vitamin B12: 1 sublingual tablet per week (under tounge).
* Calcium: Begons 3 months after surgery.
* Iron: Some patients may require additional iron.
In addition, each meal must include a good source of protein for adequate wound
healing and maintenance of muslce mass. A good rule to remember is protein FIRST
at each meal.
ACTIVITIES AND EXERCISE:
Exercise is essential for the successful treatment of clinically severe obesity
and is given a prominent role in the multidisciplinary approach to this disease.
Generally speaking, exercise is fundamental for good health and especially
important for weight loss and weight maintenance.
Some of the physiological benefits include:
* Increased daily energy expenditure.
* Decreased appetite.
* Preservation of muscle mass during weight loss.
* Reduced body fat.
* Increased cardiac efficiency (both at rest and during exercise).
* Increased flexibility.
* Better motor coordination.
Psychological effects are also recognized with exercise and include:
* Increased energy.
* Less fatigue.
* Improvements in body image and self esteem.
Initially walking should be emphasized. Swimming is also an excellent form of
exercise as are other aquatic activities such as water aerobics. As weight comes
down and muscles become toned, more exercise becomes available in sports, games,
aerobics, etc. Patients find their ability to participate in athletic activities
with family and friends greatly enhanced. Physical activity becomes more
pleasant. Daily exercise is recommended and we encourage different types of
exercise to reduce the risk of overuse, injuries and boredom. The benefits of
exercise cannot be stored. They are quickly lost once regular exercise has
ceased. Therfore, it is important to emphasize lifelong exercise habits; not
short term fitness fads.
KEYS TO SUCCESS:
Success in reaching and maintaining a satisfactory weight depends on a
continuing lifelong effort to use the gastric bypass experience properly and to
maintain a completely revised and healthy habit pattern with respect to food and
exercise.
* Eat no more than 3 meals a day.
* No snacking between meals.
* Avoid high calorie drinks.
* Drink at least 64 oinces of water each day.
* Exercise daily for 45 minutes to an hour.
* Remember "Protein First".
* Take all vitamin and mineral suppliments as directed by the surgeon.
* Obtain labwork as requested by the surgeon.
* So NOT smoke or drink alcoholic beverages after surgery.
* Eliminate the use ofaspirin, aspirin derivatives, steroids, diet pills, and
non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Motrin, Aleve, Naprosyn, Advil and
others.
* Do not become pregnant withen the first year after surgery.
I know that since I'm only a few weeks post op that OJ and other
citric type juices/foods will cause pouch pain. I've really been
craving Orange juice lately...since surgery actually...and wondered
if anyone knew when... if ever...I would be able to have OJ again?
Through the years, it seems as though it has always been the only
thing that has been able to satisfy the occasional "thirsties" in the
middle of the night.
Thanks!
Amanda

hi ami,
i am about 3 weeks post of from my surgery, lap rny
and have only incurred nausea or cramping 2-3 times,
from eggs as well and eating too fast. i am certain
that your doctor will find if anything needs to be
looked at in that what you are experiencing isn't
"normal" from drinking water especially. good luck!

Good Day Lori Anne Just wanted to drop you a note I am also 5'3 being short
really adds to the battle.
I weigh 143 today but have been stuck for 7 weeks between 149 and 143 back
and forth , I am pleased with myself but like you my doctor thinks for my
bmi to be correct that I should weigh about 130-135 the struggle goes on I
work out 4 times a week trying to firm up. I know this adds weight from
muscle so I will just keep giving my all. The wonderful part of this is how
great I feel. For the first time in 20 plus years I am in control of my
weight not my weight controlling me. And weight did control my attitude
about many things. Lori Anne you are in for a treat !!!!! Life is good. Have
a good day.

bought one of those waist cinchers, that go from below the braline to
about the bellybutton. it's industrial strength, hehe. & almost
takes 2 people to put it on. didn't tell the lady i've had wls, but
she must know that flattery goes a long way, she called me slender,
wowie!
after PS, she says to wear the body shapers @ least 3 months
afterward.

Oh man, I totally forgot about the meeting last night.... we had 7
traumas (5 of them trauma blue) come in between 3pm and 6pm and we
were snowed. I didn't even get to take a lunch break..probably a
GOOD thing! :)
But the next meeting I'm not on schedule to be in the ER so I WILL
be there for the whole thing!
What was the topic last night? Who spoke? Burkett was trauma surgeon
so if Drs Gorgean or Wasco spoke, I'm going to be bummed....

Hello everyone!
I am having a horrible time with eating still (I am 5 weeks post op tomrrow).
I researched the heck out of this surgery and I still didnt expect the
stomach pains that I am having anytime I put anything into my tummy. Tiny sip
of
water (and it doesnt make a bit of difference what temp it is), little bite of
chicken, little bit of yogurt - it doesnt matter what it is, how much, or what
temperature it is - it will make my stomach cramp. Many times to the point
of writhing. Has anyone out there had this?? Think back to your first couple
of months all you seasoned post opies - were you miserable or was it smooth
sailing? Ive gotten to the point where I perfer to just not eat as opposed to
taking on the pain. Surely this isnt normal. And before all of you tell me to
call my surgeon - dont worry because I already have. Repeatedly. He started
me on Levsin and tomorrow I have an appointment for an upper GI and other
tests that might tell us what the trouble is. What I really want to know is, is
this really uncommon??
Thanks! :)

Ya know divorce is a tough road to handle and I remember when I went through
my first divorce , as bad as the marriage was, he was an alcoholic and very
very abusive, I kept thinking..I could have handled his death so much better.Of
course in my case he was a cheater and a sorry sorry husband. But I have to
say being married to him only served to make me a stronger woman. I learned to
NEVER let another man abuse me and it taught me to be tough! When the second
one had an affair while I was in a coma I thought then how low a man will sink
and give up on someone when they think with the little brain behind their
zippers, lol. This divorce also taught me to accept no weaknesses or flaws in
another man that I chose to have a life with. If I see something that sends a
flag
up then this gal is walking. I dont have to settle and wont. I know I have
kinda gone on here but in a nutshell I guess what I am trying to say is
this....when one door shuts another one opens. There is life beyond divorce.
Once the
healing begins and believe me you will know it you soon realize that all the
things you have gone through, be them good or bad, will truly make you a
better, stronger person. Never ever let a divorce make you bitter for the one
thing
that a human heart thrives on......Love. There is that one special someone out
there....it might take a while to find each other but they are there. And just
remember this...If you can dream it...all things are possible. Love to
you all............WOLFIE

I went to the doctor today. He said that everything is going great for me. My
weight loss is great and my blood tests showed nothing wrong. I have lost a
total of 74 pounds. Starting at 319 and now weighing 245 !

Hello Folks
This is the latest. I am now fighting for my disability claim they say
my surgery was cosmetic. Even after sending them the letters form
different doctors stating medically necessity. And the approval letter
from Approval from Aetna. They are crazy if they think I am going to
sit back with my hands crossed.

Well ....
Things are finally falling into place. Ahhhhhhhh the power of prayer!
Things are finally becoming more civil with my soon to be x now. I
finally found a full time job! Found an apartment! Got approved for
my college grant! Got approved for Alexa's summer camp!
This year has been very challenging for me and I have been put to the
test! But I remained strong and continued to fight and it is all
paying off.
Thank you for all of the encouraging emails! I love you all! I
know you all have not hear much from me through our group. But I
have responded and continue responding to all the individual emails I
receive. When I created this group I had a lot more time on my
hands. Now I am constantly asking where the time went? LOL!
Thank you to those who faithfully post and support each day. You are
the ones that keep the group going.
Lori, what can I say? You are the greatest! Thank you for your
continued dedication to keep the family I created together. I
appreciate all you do for the family and for me as a friend. I love
you girl!
Muwahh, kisses and hugs to you all!

Hey everyone,
I just want to say my two cents about the protein thing. My doctor had done some
tweeking on his plans and has had the dietician add POWDERED MILK to the
menus. During the day you should add about 12 TBS to your meals (mixed in) so
you will get more protein in your daily diets.

Hello Ginger it is Robin from Calif. You where asking about my goal weight
which is a good question I feel great and am pleased with my size I wear and
size 6 pant which I never wore in my life . However I still weigh 143 pounds
I wanted to weigh about 130 but we will see I have tried to improve on my
exercising actually just be more consistent however I seem to be gaining
muscle and slowing down on the weight loss which is fine because I feel so
good. So I don't know if there is a magic # but I know I have to keep on
track with my nutrition so I can continue to feel so good. You keep up the
good work
and have a great day.
