New to group & currently with Gout attack!

2007-11-30 15:14:00

Hi all,
Right now I can not figure out what to do to get this under control.
For the last several years it seemed to be going ok. I recently got
an eye infection and my dr. put me on some anti-biotic that
dehydrated me and kicked in my gout. It has now been more than 7 days
since I've been off the anti-biotic and I'm figthing getting rid of
gout. It seems to be passing from 1 foot to the other. I have tried
all the things that usually work with no results. Cherry juice, Black
cherry juice, Cherry extract tablets, Indocin (which gave me cramps),
I am drinking plenty of water and other fluids. My diet has been
changed for years. I know I can not go on any prescription drug
while I have a gout attack, but I'm getting ready to try one when
this is over.
I'm in AZ and it is currently very difficult getting in to see my dr.
while all the snowbirds are down here. It's almost impossible.
I did try Allopurinol a few years ago and it didn't seem to help.
Anyone have a suggestion as to which type of doctor will have a
better handle on getting someone on one of these drugs and how to
monitor it establish the correct dosage.
I have now had gout in 1 foot or the other for the Whole month of
Dec!!

gout vs. septic arthritis?

2007-11-30 00:18:17

I bruised my left knee about a week ago - nothing serious. But last
evening it started hurting and swelled up. I've had about 3 gout
attacks in the past 7 years, all in my left foot. But I figured I might
be having another attack in a new location so took some NSAIDs, which
helped the pain but not the inflammation. Unlike previous attacks,
however, I also have had a low grade fever for most of the day and have
noticed a couple of red streaks (about an inch long) emanating from the
inflamed area. Given that I've not experience fevers before with gout
attacks (although I know they can occur), and don't ever remember
seeing red streaks, I'm wondering if this might be septic arthritis
rather than gout. The doctor can't see me until tomorrow morning but
I'm wondering if others have experienced similar symptoms that turned
out to be gout attacks. Any insights would be appreciated. Cheers,
W.D.

Hi
Was diagnosed with gout a month ago.
Started in the join of my big toe on my right foot.
Been off work ever since as I have to wear safety shoes.
Have had medication but it flared up again three days ago.
Taking Cheery tablets as a self help and trying to avoid foods that
may cause it.
How do I get rid of it?
Thanks for letting me in.

NEWBIE

2007-11-29 15:16:22

hello,
my husband was just diagnosed, he has family history on both sides so
it's not a big shock. looking for best ways to change our diet -
tips/recipes, etc. found the list of alkaline to acidic foods and of
course our typical diet sits firmly in the pH 7.0 and below category.
where did this list come from? any good cookbooks? best web
resources? thoughts on maintenance drugs versus herbal/natural
supplements? we have no health insurance at this time, the drugs
don't seem very expensive but... and of course, as a young man, he
wants to know if he can still drink beer :)
thanks!

It's Amazing

I have been on these boards for over a year. In this time I have seen again and again posts that say: "started Allopurinol and am still having attacks, each "Month" they are getting less and I have to take Cholchcine to help but the doc says stick with it because it takes a while to get working right! Some wait for up to or over SIX months.

Then I see posts that say: "I am doing good on Allopurinol and the attacks are no longer happening", yet they still do not drink or eat what they want on this drug and even avoid Turkey, Steak, Seafood, and more.

Take the same individual and get them on some good foods, natural supplements, and herbs and the first sign of a problem they quit and say it doesn't work and they go running to the drug companies or the doctor for help. When asked if there is a natural way to battle gout a loud NO erupts from their posts.

I have been in both camps and I tell you with all my conviction that you do not have to live on drugs, you can eat what you want (not overindulgence) and live a normal life gout free.

At 30 I started to have gout attacks and was put on Allopurinol, the doctor never told me about food choices and how different foods effect the system, not even a word, why.... he did not have a clue that's why.

By 40 after I continued with a poor diet and taking Allo for 10 years, I started having gout attacks even on 600mg of Allopurinol and was having to take cholchine daily along with the it. By 44 my liver was enlarged, my gout attacks came monthly, I developed hepatitis, and they were worried I might have liver cancer. It was that year in the middle of a double knee Gout attack that I realized the Doctor had no clue as to what he was doing and floored me when he said your blood work shows the uric acid levels are FINE. Gee doc maybe because all the uric acid is crystallized in both of my dam knees! I walked out of that office swearing I would get control of my Gout, my Health, and my Life by natural foods, herbs and vitamins rather that some laboratory junky method.

God / Nature put everything we need on this earth you just have to know how where to look. When science finds it... they want to take it apart..... find out how and why it works, then they isolate it and call it a drug, forgetting that God / Nature put the other ingredients in there for a reason. Years later they either come up with new drugs to correct the harmful issues the last one caused or they pull it off the market because the issues from the drug are life threatening and they scratch their heads in wonderment as to what went wrong.

Look around, diabetes, IBS, Chrons, fibromyalgia, obesity, Alzheimer, CFS, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. are in record numbers all over the place. Why.... it is our food choices: processed foods and meats, junk foods, sodas, fast foods, big meals, sitting on our as....es. This is not what God / Nature meant us to eat and our bodies are rejecting it and getting sicker and sicker daily. It sort of like smoking, why did it take cancer to tell us breathing in burnt tobacco leaves probably was not good for our lungs! Wake up and before you put that Twinke in your mouth...read the ingredients.... think gee is this a natural substance or is this the same to my metabolism as smoke is to my lungs!

Hey I am not without shame, I eat bad things but keep them in my life as a treat not as a staple in my diet!

Sorry for the Rant!

Dark-colored cola may cause kidney disease

Posted: Nov 30th 2007 2:11PM by Chris Sparling

It appears as though there may be a risk to drinking diet soda after all, although it has nothing to do with the alleged risk of obesity. Rather, there is evidence to suggest that drinking dark-colored diet cola (and dark-colored regular cola) can increase your risk of kidney disease.

Based on a report published in the journal Epidemiology, drinking two or more dark-colored sodas -- such as Coke, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, and similar generic brands -- per day doubles your chances of kidney disease.

The phosphoric acid found in dark colas, but not in clear sodas such as Sprite and 7-Up, is what gives it its unique taste, but also what may lead to the development of kidney stones. This, in turn, can potentially lead to complications and disease.

I suppose this is yet another reason to just stick to plain ol' water.

My gout story/solution

2007-11-28 21:42:50

I got my first attack of gout in my big toe after stubbing it about 20
years ago.
I abhor doctors and tried to control recurring attacks through diet
and ibuprofen, but the attacks got worse and worse, spreading to
almost all joints of my body, off and on.
Five years ago, I tried following a doctor's recommendation about
Allopurinol to lower uric acid levels, but after two weeks of the
worst attacks ever, I gave up, merely taking colchicine and ibuprofen
to counter the attacks.
I finally buckled down two Augusts ago and took 300 mg of Allopurinol
per day. The doc told me that gout attacks were common during the
first couple of months.
Two months later, with uric acid levels down, I was still having very
painful attacks, and the doc said "I told you a few months for it to
start working."
After four months of recurring attacks, he said, "Well, let's give it
six months."
I'm glad I did.
Finally, the attacks lessened and disappeared. The tophi on my elbow
and ankle and knuckles began to shrink (I actually had a large one
surgically removed from my ankle before starting the meds).
I now do a maintenance dose of 300mg allopurinol per day, along with
indomethacin or ibuprofen for any minor aches.
I also take 1mg of colchicing per day as a maintenance dose and
haven't had a major attack in months...the minor flare-ups are easily
controlled by indo. or ibu.
I still won't eat fried fish or turkey, knowing that these can "set me
off" with an attack of gout.
Good luck to you all. It looks like I am outta here!
(I sure wish they would get PEG-Uricase therapy going so nobody else
has to go through this!)

Turkey

2007-11-28 11:54:11

today is the day of the turkey and it is high on the list of purine
foods so not for the gout people. I like turkey and pumpkin pie and I
dislike gout. Are any of you planning to eat a tiny bit of turkey today
I won't tell on you.

PH

2007-11-28 10:54:00

How do we test for body PH at home? Is there a simple procedure we can
easily perform?
David

Why PH is so important for gout sufferers (layman's terms)

2007-11-27 20:39:59

Body Ph is measured on a scale from 0-14. Seven is neutral, a middle balance
between
acid (lower numbers) and alkaline (higher numbers). All body processes, from
eating &
drinking to exercise & body cell turnover, creates acid. This acid must be
removed from
the body. The two biggest organs responsible for this removal are the kidneys
and the
lungs. In order for the body to expel acidic waste, and not damage the kidneys
and other
organs during removal, the waste must be made neutral. (Note: Your body cannot
and will
not remove acid waste without neutralizing it first! ) Minerals, especially
calcium,
magnesium and potassium, buffer or neutralize the acidic wastes because they are
alkaline. If not enough minerals are gleaned from the diet, the body will begin
to take
minerals and nutrients from your bones and muscle. An acid diet will also
prevent further
absorption of these same minerals and nutrients from your food, therefore making
the
body PH even more acidic. (Only at a neutral, optimal balance of between 7 and
7.5, can all
these minerals nutrients be absorbed from what you are eating.)
Meat, fish, sugar, pastries, candy, white rice, Alcohol, white bread and flour
products,
cigarettes, some medications, coffee, caffeinated beverages, soda, and most
medications
are acid forming. Nearly all fruits and vegetables are alkaline forming. The key
here is
balance. We gout people have trouble getting rid of the extra uric acid in our
systems. It's
of utmost importance that we help our bodies neutralize it through an alkalizing
diet, so
we can get rid of it more efficiently. So get some PH hydrion test paper. Check
either your
urine or saliva. Do it often. You'll be helping yourself not only to freedom
from gout, but
to health in general. Below are two books I highly recommend and a website I
found
invaluable. I just had a full health exam and have 'cured' myself of gout. (
"Cured" is a mis-
statement. I believe lack of gout is a mixture of proper PH balance, low uric
acid levels
and a diet that supports it. ) I hope this helps someone else as much as it's
helped me.
Sincerely, Michele

Help Your kidney's by balancing the pH balance of your system & urine

2007-11-27 04:09:07

Mild acidosis can cause such problems as:
* Cardiovascular damage, including the constriction of blood vessels and the reduction of oxygen.
* Weight gain, obesity and diabetes.
* Bladder and kidney conditions, including kidney stones.
* Immune deficiency.
* Acceleration of free radical damage, possibly contributing to cancerous mutations.
* Premature aging.
* Osteoporosis; weak, brittle bones, hip fractures and bone spurs.
* Joint pain, aching muscles and lactic acid buildup.
* Low energy and chronic fatigue.

A recent seven year study conducted at the University of California, San Francisco, on 9,000 women showed that those who have chronic acidosis are at greater risk for bone loss than those who have normal pH levels. The scientists who carried out this experiment believe that many of the hip fractures prevalent among middle aged women are connected to high acidity caused by a diet rich in animal foods and low in vegetables. This is because the body borrows calcium from the bones in order to balance pH.
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

The biggest problem scientists have found is that over time the human body becomes depleted of calcium. A compound called mono-ortho-calcium phosphate is the chemical buffer for the blood. This buffer maintains the alkaline level (or the lack of acidity) in your blood. Without it you would die. If the acidity level of your blood changes even slightly you die immediately. But in order to supply enough calcium for buffering we must have enough calcium being absorbed from our diet or our body will simply rob the needed calcium from our bones and teeth.
The more acidic we become, the harder it is for oxygen to be present, so our biological terrain also becomes more anaerobic. Without adequate oxygenation, unfriendly bacteria, viruses, molds, and fungus can live and prosper. Then our cells cannot carry on their life-giving functions in a very efficient manner because our biological chemical reactions need oxygen.

Some Common Diseases and their Relationship to Acidity

Cancer

While the normal cells of the human body degenerate, and acidic wastes accumulate, cancer will make a genetic transformation and keep propagating itself in order to survive in such acidic surroundings.

There have been two theories on the basic causes of cancer. One is the oxygen deficiency theory by a German biochemist, Dr. Warback. The other is the theory of acidic cells, by a Japanese doctor, Dr. Airashi.
Dr. Warback discovered that if oxygen is removed from a health cell, the cell will start to turn cancerous. Dr. Warback won the Nobel prize by proving this theory through his many experiments.
Dr. Airashi showed that cells that survive in acidic environments will eventually develop cancerous characteristics.

Even though cancer cells are eliminated entirely through an operation, they reoccur because the acidic surroundings still remain after the operation. So, to help prevent this, we should stop the development of acidosis by having a healthy diet, avoiding stress, living in a healthy environment and exercising.

Obesity

The human body is very intelligent. As we become more and more acidic the body starts to set up defense mechanisms to keep the damaging acid from entering our vital organs. It is known that acid gets stored in fat cells. After all, if the acid does come into contact with an organ the acid has a chance to eat holes in the tissue. This may cause the cells to mutate. The oxygen level drops in this acidic environment and calcium begins to be depleted.
So as a defense mechanism, your body may actually make fat to protect you from your overly-acidic self. Those fat cells and cellulite deposits may actually be packing up the acid and trying to keep it a safe distance from your organs. The fat may be saving your vital organs from damage. Many people have found that a return to a healthy inner biological terrain helps them to lose excess fat.

Diabetes

When acidic wastes accumulate in the pancreas, diabetes can develop due to lack of insulin in the body.
Doctors say that symptoms of diabetes appear mainly in people above 40, with no symptoms of diabetes in their 20s. How do they differ from each other?
In general, the quantity of accumulated acidic wastes after the age of 40 is far more than those in their 20s, especially in the pancreas. Nevertheless, we may help avoid the onset of diabetes if we flush out the acidic waste in our bodies by drinking plenty of healthy water.

Hypertension

Hypertension is a common illness that occurs due to three reasons.
1) Hypertension caused by clogged capillary vessels due to physical reasons.
2) Narrowed blood vessels caused by acidic wastes.
Thus, blood pressure has to be higher naturally in order to supply sufficient quantities of blood through the narrow vessels.
3) Lack of oxygen due to chemical reasons, namely solidified acidic waste in the vessels.

Hypotension

Hypotension occurs as the heart muscles deteriorate due to a lack of calcium ions, caused by acidic waste.
A patient with hypotension may regain his health by drinking healthy mineralized water. This is because calcium ions in alkaline water can help to restore the heart's activities when caused by a lack of calcium ions.

Kidney Ailment and Kidney Stone

One of the major functions of alkaline water is to purify or help remove the wastes in the body. The accumulation of excessive wastes in the kidneys weakens the kidneys. When cells survive in an excessive acidic environment, swelling of the kidneys occurs.
In order to remain healthy, cells should expel all the waste produced by them. But if the blood becomes more acidic them the waste will cling to the walls of cells, causing solidification of acidic fluoride in the kidneys and kidney stones.

Osteoporosis and Gout

Human bones function as a calcium bank for the body. A combination of calcium and phosphorus, bones stay healthy as long as there are adequate amounts of these two substances present. To neutralize excessive quantities of waste or acidity, the body starts to deprive the bones of calcium, which may be harmful to the body. Symptoms of calcium deficiency are not evident through X-ray examinations and are only visible when 30-40% of the calcium in the bone has already been depleted.
Gout happens when calcium accumulates in the capillary blood vessels of the hands and legs. Normally, gout occurs in toe joints, knee joints, and finger joints and drinking alkaline water is one of the best treatments.

Chronic constipation

Dr. Choi, a medical practitioner at the Seoul National Medical University, observed 15 patients (10 men and 5 women) who had suffered from constipation for over a year. Results showed that the symptoms of constipation were alleviated when alkaline water was consumed for a period of 1-2 weeks. Twelve of the fifteen patients recovered remarkably well after this period. This is true because by lubricating the wastes secreted on the walls of the large intestine, excretion become easier.
Dr. Choi also observed that there was a remarkable improvement in how alert his patients were after drinking alkaline water.

Stress and Headache

When we suffer from stress, our body produces more acidic waste, leading to acidosis. Physical stress can be relieved by getting a good rest. Nowadays, however, most of us do not find the time to relieve mental stress. Continued long term stress will create harmful problems like headaches, mental disorder, bad temper and unbalanced hormone excretion, etc. There are two kinds of stress. One is physical stress caused by physical activities and the other is mental stress caused by mental fatigue.

Donating a kidney

2007-11-26 22:48:35

I have a mild case of gout, which is completely under control with 300
mg a day of allo. One of my dear cousins lost a kidney to disease
about ten years ago, and today I found out he is having big problems
with his remaining one, and will likely need to go on dialysis. I
would donate one of my kidneys to him instantly if there was a match,
but I worry about how that will affect my gout. I know normal people
can function just fine with one kidney, but if both of mine together
fail to adequately deal with my uric acid, what would happen if I only
had one?

baking soda vs. ph lowering products

2007-11-25 17:39:42

I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the effectiveness of baking soda
raising ph
versus the commercial ph raising products like Alkalive and Alkalife. How about
'green
drinks' or ph drops (to add to water) or mineral supplements. What do you find
works best,
and how often do you keep tract of your ph (what ph papers are best)? Thanks,

Flu Shots for those with Gout?

2007-11-25 13:15:06

Hi All...
Flu season is here... and I missed today's flu-shot session at my
employers (I *hate* needles... and get sick <pass-out
fool around with the needle before jabbing me... <sigh
probably should get one (because I don't want to risk the flu,
either)... but I'm hesitating for various reasons.
My question is .... does a flu shot affect those with gout
differently than those without gout?
Would getting the flu cause more gout problems?
If I do something to raise my white-blood cell count (supposedly to
fight infections).... will this increase in white-blood-cells also
cause problems with the gout areas?
Inflamation is accompanied (caused?) by increase in white-blood
cells...
I don't want to go through the pain with gout if I can avoid it...
Any ideas? Experience?

Just gone up to 600mg Allo a day

2007-11-25 03:13:39

UA reads about 316, no major attacks for over two years, but I'm still getting pre gouty sharp pains after I eat or drink my triggers (alcohol and citrus mainly from what I can tell), and I've had a couple of small attacks (that went away immediately with 300mgs of diclofenac).

My rheum says that I'm having to take a lot of Allo to keep my UA at that level (lower than the level you'd find in a normal person), so I must be producing an awful lot of the stuff.

I've been on 500mg for about six months and its been making the world of difference, but as my rheum suggested I'm still likely to simply put up with pain, and frankly I should get none at all, and I think he's right.

So, up to 600 for me. Back to see him in several months.

About to go out on a 30 mile bike ride, second time this week.

Loving the allo, strength to those that can't take the stuff.

¦^ÂСG [gout] Attack won't quit

2007-11-25 02:01:02

Hi Gloria,

I also found my gout did not fully recover in recent attacks. If you are not taking any meditation currently, try strict food diet and drink tons of water as suggested by our dear group members. I also found keep exercising your swelling foot is crucial - you may walk, swim or any other exercise to let your foot "moves". I reckon through exercise you should have better blood circulation to drain away the urid acid.

Hope that helps and take good care !

Cheers,

Edward
Gloria <gbrownrab@...

Its been almost 4 weeks and this attack wont quit. I'm not in real
pain but the swelling is still there with an occasional hint of pain.
It's mainly on the top of my foot and I can't wear any of my shoes.
I've been in house slippers all this time....big men's house slippers.
Actually this attack wasn't so painful....I only had about 2 days of
bad pain. I don't understand why I'm still having so much swelling
though. I guess I need to see my doctor because the swelling is not
getting any better. Any suggestions?

WONDERFUL book! The Acid Alkaline Food Guide

Osteoporosis, age-

low-level acid condition compromises our health."
"The book begins by explaining what the acid/alkaline of your body has to do
with the acid/
alkaline influence of foods. It then explains how the pH of foods, once eaten,
may change in
your bodyas citric acid fruits, once digested, become alkaline. As complicated
as this
process is, the authors provide the guidelines for the analysis of the foods
covered in the
book. This section is then followed by a listing of thousands of foods and their
acid/alkaline
ranges. Included are insets and groups that can help the reader better direct
their food
searches." Amazon review
I highly recommend this little book to all. It's demystified the acid/alkaline
diet for me. Best,
Michele

Mark Salzman

2007-11-23 23:35:20

Thanks Mark , Among my uneases I list "CKF" and as such I have a nephrologist specialist I see and he keeps fairly close tabs on kidney functions. However I have had gout for all 2007 and my doctor just figured it out Sept. so I have to take a much more active role in my health care or die.As I have some of what appears to be permanant damages to my tendons

to enjoy.
"Mark E. Saltzman" <businessattorney@...

Probenecid won't help with the swelling. You need
Cochicine or Indomethicine for that. Probenecid helps
excrete uric acid to prevent future attacks.
Doses of Probenecid vary, but make sure that your
doctor keeps close track of your kidney function. Gout
and the related drugs and really screw them up.

Sweetners !!!

My Question this evening is : Should I lump the PH and phosphorous bad
effects to include the "SPLENDA"???????
I see good reposrts on "Stevia " But is is not being used in products
and I hear it costs are higher than the neighbor junkie at a party ???

Michele, Thanks for the perfect list of Ph foods , Bill

Gout in the knee

2007-11-23 16:51:03

Hi folks. This is my first post, though I've been reading your posts
with some interest.
I was diagnosed with gout last year, with attacks solely occurring in
my ankles (once in my elbow). Taking Alipurinol by-and-large fixed
the problem and I have only had the slightest twinges when I've been
enjoying life (!).
Since July though, I have had gout type pains in my knee. They range
in severity but are sometimes very bad. My doctor has referred me to
an osteopath because she thinks I must have done some tendon damage
during a 10K run at the start of July.
Perhaps she is right, but I have it in my head that this is gout. My
wife disagrees as well since I do not have redness or heat. There is
some swelling (my doctor on one visit called it impressive). I do
have lumps when the swelling goes and these seem to vary in size and
position. Another thing - it is definitely worse at night. I take
some Valerian to get to sleep but I invariably awake in the night and
in a shallow state of annoyance move position-to-position as I find
and lose relief from the pain.
My question, to sum up, is, "Are gout symptoms variable or are they
always accompanied by redness and physical heat?"
Sorry for the long-winded post.
Nelson

pregnancy and gout

2007-11-22 15:46:38

I am five months pregnant and the doctor told me that those horrible
throbbing pains I have been having alongside my big toe are a symptom
of gout. The doctor said there are a variety of medications that can
deal with the symptoms of gout...but I have to wait until after I have
the baby.
Anyone have any suggestions on what I should do in the meantime? This
is the strangest illness I have ever encountered because I will be fine
for several days and then my foot will throb and feel like hundreds of
needles are poking it.
Thanks so much!
Amy

a missing puzzle piece: BAKING SODA

2007-11-22 14:15:25

Do not use baking soda if you have high blood pressure or indulge in salty
snacks and
foods. Ask your doctor first, because it is high in sodium. I was following an
anti-gout,
alkalinizing diet, and was feeling much, much better. But I still felt like my
immune system
was running on high. When I would exercise, I had trouble catching my breath,
and I still
had to carry tissues for an on and off runny nose. Why? We gout folks carry and
store a
large excess of uric acid. Therefore our bodies remain in an acidic state,
allowing for all
kinds of diseases and allergies to develop (see links). The body must be kept
within a
certain PH balance to remain healthy. Too much either way, and you develop
problems. I
kept reading about baking soda, and how the body turns acidic during sleep,
heavy
exercise, or a diet high in carbohydrates. So I thought I'd try it. Since I
don't weigh much, I
halved the usual dose, which is a half teaspoon, to 1/4 teaspoon in a glass of
water just
before bed. This had immediate results. I lost my wheeze and don't have to carry
tissues
anymore. BTW, I am not on any other medications, but do take supplements and
follow an
alkaline/gout diet. Please see llinks below for further info or google gout &
body ph or
disease & body ph. Sincerely, Michele

newbie opening staement

2007-11-22 04:10:11

Howdy all. I am 76 and a guy in Oregon. I have gout, cronic kidney
failure, congestive heart failure and diabetes #2. So I am the far end
of life.
In Feb. 2007 , I develpoed pain and red swollen toes on left foot, As a
diabetic I had hugely reduced feeling in both feet, so other than
difficult walking and the red toes I had no clue I was gouty. then 3
months later I got the same in the right foot but this time more pain
this too passed in a few weeks,Then in Jylu I had an attack in my knee
and got prednisone injected a month later it hit the other knee and I
was crippled .
September 9 The gout hit my left wrist and now the doctor went into
search mode with a blood test then a pee test and put me on predisone
and probenimid. It helped some tomorrow is a month and I still have the
swelling red and hot left hand that is all but unuseable.
And now it is in my right hand too.
My probenicid is at 500 mg.twice a day and I want more . I suspect my
food is only partly responsible and it is my kidneys that are a
problem. Sorry to be so chatty. Bill

Great news all !!!!!

2007-11-22 01:23:53

I want to share good news..... I was put on two probenemid a day and gout continued for a month in the flared up state , full O'pain.

Well reading stories online I saw where this drug can be kicked up to 6 a day with great results in one case, so I raised my dose to 3 aday and this morning gout is gone . Pain for a month is stopped overnite with 3 so my correct dose is 3. Draw your own conclusions ....I must admit I had 5 episodes of gout before my doctor concluded I had gout.

Gout and Cayce

2007-11-21 13:06:18

Hi to all,
As a gout sufferer, I am open to all possible means of cure. In my
wanderings on the net, I came across information on Edgar Cayce. I
have read his general readings on arthritis treatment but I do not
seem to comprehend his treatments. I am curious to try though. I have
been with Zyloprim and Colchicine and I still hope for a cure.
Can anyone please comment on this? Thanks.
Dave

Have you ever had this kind of Gout attack?

2007-11-21 12:58:33

I have not had a Gout attack in over a year. And the last one was in my
right knee and it was the worse one ever and lasted weeks.
Now I started having a weird pain and kind of numbness in my left knee
over a week ago and then it went away. Yesterday it came back in the
left knee and the pain shooting down my calf. I thought I had pulled
something or ? Then last night my knee was aching and I put my weight
on it to get into bed and it felt just like my right knee did last year.
My question is have you ever had a slow moving, sporadic Gout attack?
My other attacks came on fast and usually when I was sleeping-woke up
by more pain then this episode initially.

Balancing Acid/Alkaline Foods and some questions

2007-11-21 06:46:57

Hi all. In my search for wellness and freedom from gout, I found a wonderful
website on
balancing acid/alkaline foods and why it's important. Through good diet (thanks
to all the
info here) I have managed to get my gout under control, but still found my
immune system
on high alert. I asked a friend, who is a nutritionist about how to quiet an
immune system set
on high because of gout, and she gave me some additional ideas about
supplements. She
mentioned a (high quality) MultiMineral without iron. Apparently, this too will
help balance
bodily pH.This is very important for gout sufferers as well as overall wellness.
Check out the
website below for more info on balancing acid/alkaline foods and why it's so
important. Thanks again for all your tips and insights. You've helped me
tremendously.
Sincerely, Michele

Diet Questions

Can anyone tell me what foods and drinks too avoid to keep gout at
bay? Does pop aggravate it? THANKS!

Allopurinol questions

2007-11-20 23:08:04

Hi all,
After about 3 weeks taking one Allopurinol 300mg daily my uric acid
went from 8.9 to 5.6. I am obviously also watching closely what I eat.
I asked the doctor if now that the uric acid is in the normal range if
I should stop taking the Allopurinol or at least lower the dosage, but
he said to continue taking it.
I am still getting over a mild gout attack with the typical toe pain
and taking the Probenecid/Colchicine for the past few days, one a day.
I would like to hear feedback and opinions from others on how long to
continue taking Allopurinol, consequences of continuing or not, etc.
Thanks, JCV

Announcement: you have a new moderator!

2007-11-19 12:43:30

Hi all,
Terry has been doing almost all of the moderation for the group lately, and he
was the one
who came up with a very workable list of guidelines for the group when we really
needed
them. I think he will make a great moderator and owner of this group.
I am really proud of this group. I run quite a few online support groups, and I
am looking
for people to take over the larger ones, as I feel those need and deserve a
moderator who
can concentrate on the one group and not be overworked by having many groups.
This
group is certainly one of my largest. I started it years ago for two reasons:
my
grandmother had suffered from gout and the group is in her memory, and when I
had a
rheumatic diseases website (am putting up a new one but it's not ready yet) I
discovered
that, at that time, there were almost no online resources for several of the
more common
rheumatic diseases, and gout was one of these. It makes me really happy to see
how the
group has grown and become what I feel is a great source for support and
information.
I don't have gout myself, although I know about it due to it affecting family
members and
also due to formerly having a job as a rheumatic diseases health educator for
the Arthritis
Foundation. I think the pain of gout is not respected as much as it should be;
it is one of
the most painful diseases known.
So Terry and I are going to switch positions. I am giving the ownership and
primary
moderator status to him, and I will stay on as an emergency co-mod in case his
computer
connection isn't working one day or something.
Since he has been moderating for some time now, you shouldn't feel any
disruptive
changes. Congrats to Terry for doing such a great job.
Hugs
Pam
